SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, APRIL 14, 2018 FRAA features student artist Hailey Copeland Japanese Internment exhibit moves to Deadwood COURTESY PHOTO PHOTO BY FIRST LAST/SIUSLAW NEWS Siuslaw Middle School student Hailey Copeland shows her work at Florence Regional Arts Alliance. Florence Regional Arts Alliance (FRAA) will feature the artwork of Siuslaw Middle School student Hailey Copeland during the 2nd Saturday Gallery Tour on Saturday, April 14, from 3 to 5 p.m. The Copeland family recent- ly moved here from Seattle, Wash., and this is a wonderful opportunity to welcome them to the Florence community. Copeland’s medium is col- ored pencil and ink; however, she is beginning to learn water- color, and is interested in learn- ing new mediums. She plans to venture out into abstract and realism. As for now, anime — the Japanese term for animation — is her favorite thing to draw. It is often characterized by color- ful graphics, vibrant characters and fantastical themes. Copeland is self-taught, and is motivated by her parents, who also share her enjoyment of art. As her mom says, “We real- ize how good she is and can be, so we highly encourage her and try to keep her well supplied in art supplies and paper. She enjoys it — it’s what makes her happy.” Copeland’s artwork will be at the FRAA Gallery, 120 Maple St., during the entire month of April, but 2nd Saturday would be a perfect time to meet this talented youth artist. Complimentary refresh- ments will be served. 3 A The Deadwood Committee for the Architecture of Internment Exhibit and Deadwood Creek Services will host the exhibit “Architecture of Internment: The Build Up to Wartime Incarceration” today, April 14, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibit, which had been on display at the Siuslaw Public Library (above), explores how Oregonians par- ticipated in the decision to incarcerate Japanese Americans and Japanese immigrants during World War II. At 4 p.m., local author and international diplomacy expert Mel Gurtov will present “Who Are We? America’s Problematic Treatment of Immigrants.” The event will be held at the Deadwood Community Center, located 4.5 miles up Deadwood Creek Rd. Fundraiser to benefit Children’s Advocacy Center On April 20, the Yachats Ladies Club is inviting the coastal community to attend and support a fundraising Roast Pork Loin Benefit Dinner for the Children’s Advocacy Center of Lincoln County. The Children’s Advocacy Center of Lincoln County strives to reduce trauma to known and suspected child abuse victims through effective evaluation, treatment and advo- cacy in a secure, culturally sen- sitive, healing environment while working to prevent child abuse in all of its forms. The Yachats Ladies Club has been a longtime supporter of the Children’s Advocacy Center by creating and provid- ing many of the quilts that each child receives when they come to the center for services. The Children’s Advocacy Center of Lincoln County is a nonprofit entity and does not charge for its services. It is entirely dependent on private and government grants, dona- tions and fundraising efforts like this special Benefit Dinner. The dinner will be served on Friday, April 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Yachats Ladies Club Clubhouse at 286 W. Third St. in Yachats. The benefit dinner includes a generous serving of Roast Pork Loin and gravy with herb roast- ed potatoes, savory green beans, fruity coleslaw and a roll. The dinner also includes a layered dessert called Dirt Cake and choice of coffee or tea all for $15 at the door. To go dinners will be avail- able as well. The dinner to support the Children’s Advocacy Center is a fun and entertaining way for the public to serve our commu- nity while enjoying being served a delicious home made dinner, visiting with neighbors and meeting new folks. All din- ner proceeds go to the Children’s Advocacy Center of Lincoln County.
