2 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, MARCH 31, 2018 OBITUARY GORDON —Richard Carver Gordon went to heaven peacefully the wee hours of March 17, 2018, at Spruce Point Assisted Living in Florence. Richard was born in 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio; educated in Los Angeles; graduated from Alexander Hamilton High School; attended S a n t a M o n i c a J u n i o r College; played varsi- ty baseball at Richard both schools; Gordon and was tagged with the nickname “Flash” Gordon. His favorite educational experience was at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo. Richard served in the Navy during WWII for four years. After that, he entered the University of Southern California on the G.I. Bill, graduated with a psychology major. He married Nancy Jean Willard in West Los Angeles and was happily married for 55 years until her death in 2003. He was employed with Clary Multiplier-Corp, was promoted and transferred to Clary’s Denver office as branch man- ager. Upon his resignation, he accepted a sales position with BM&T Paper in Los Angeles, where he worked 27 years and received “Salesman of the Year” awards. Richard spoke in glowing terms of his years as a sales- man. He had found his “niche.” When he retired, he and Nancy moved to Palos Verdes, Calif., then to Portola, Calif. When they sold their home in Portola, they became “King and Queen of the Road” for 10 years, traveling around the United States. “What is the best thing about this marvelous country? The people.” Richard and Nancy ended their “gypsy lives” and settled in Florence. He joined the Elks, St. Andrew Episcopal Church, the PROSS group and volun- teered at the Florence Events Center and FAAHP. “My favorite town in the USA? Easily, Florence, Ore.” We, as dear friends of Richard, wish to express our deepest gratitude to the won- derful and caring staff at Spruce Point and also the Hospice staff. And thank you, Dr. Powley, for loving Richard as much as we all did. Richard leaves to mourn a host of friends — to know him was to love him. What a gentle, wonderful man, full of wit, charm, impeccable, good old-fashioned manners, intelligence, and oh, that mis- chievous sparkled in his eyes. Rest well, Richard, we’ll see you soon. Richard’s service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 4, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Interment will be in the church memorial garden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Florence Hospice Program. 2 018 Rhododendron Fes 2018 Rhododendron Festival Court Introducing r P incess Abigail Galvan-Mendez Western Lane Ambulance District and Siuslaw Valley Fire & Rescue Ambulance and fire call runs March 18-24 Date Time 3/18/18 3/18/18 3/18/18 3/18/18 3/18/18 3/18/18 3/18/18 3/18/18 3/18/18 3/18/18 3/18/18 3/19/18 3/19/18 3/19/18 3/19/18 3/19/18 3/19/18 3/20/18 3/20/18 3/20/18 3/20/18 3/20/18 3/20/18 3/21/18 3/21/18 3/21/18 3/21/18 3/21/18 3/21/18 3/21/18 3/21/18 6:11 8:47 9:31 9:40 11:07 12:00 12:46 19:28 19:44 22:02 22:26 2:44 7:55 10:08 17:24 19:01 21:30 1:25 11:05 12:32 16:06 17:44 23:29 8:07 10:53 11:08 14:59 15:02 15:33 16:55 23:00 Area Type 35th St Maple St Maple St Nopal St MVA, Hwy 101 MVA, Hwy 101 Rhododendron Dr Rhododendron Dr Lake Point Dr Hwy 101 Mitchell Lp Kingwood St 20th St Hilltop Dr Hwy 101 Xylo St 9th St Hwy 126 Rhododendron Dr MVA, Hwy 101 9th St Rhododendron Dr Rhododendron Dr Nopal St Rhododendron Dr 9th St 8th St Bay St 21st St 30th Wy Rhododendron Dr Dunes City seeks applicants to Planning Commission Dunes City is accepting applications for a planning commissioner. He did, how- ever, serve two tours in Vietnam during his 20-year service in the U.S. Marine Corps between 1952 and 1972. Siuslaw News regrets the error.
