With only two returning seniors, Dominic Wells and Cole Spencer, there weren’t many familiar faces. Among them, however, was longtime head coach Johnny Sundstrom, who returns to the helm after a two-year absence. With previous coach Aaron Longo’s move to St. Helens at the end of last season, the position was open and Sundstrom was tapped to reclaim his post with the growing program. “We definitely have a much bigger turnout than in recent years, particular- ly in the underclassmen,” said Sundstrom. “It’s a good foundation for the future of the program.” All told, the team has six freshmen and eight sophomores, with no juniors on this year’s roster. Of the group, five are girls, all of whom Sundstrom said had strong ath- letic ability. “It’s definitely a ‘building’ year for us and not a ‘re-building year,’” said A WEEKLY FISHING REPORT FOR THE LOCAL REGION www.dfw.state.or.us/RR MID COAST LAKES: Long-time Mapleton track and field coach Johnny Sundstrom (center) returns to helm after a two-year absence; (below) members of this year’s team track and field warm up with stretches during practice last Monday. Sundstrom, “But we’re building on solid group.” Following last week’s inter-squad “mini meet,” during which all athletes compete in four events — a sprint, a medium run, long jump and shot put — Sundstrom said he was able to set a baseline of strengths and weaknesses, as well as potential events for each team member heading into the season. “It’s a diverse group, with strengths in sprints and field events,” said Sundstrom. The Sailors will kick off the season Tuesday, March 20, when they host the Mapleton 300 meet, an icebreaker focusing on running events. Races will begin at 4 p.m. Stocking of mid coast lakes began in February. Siltcoos Lagoon was not stocked the week of Feb. 5 due to low levels of dis- solved oxygen. Fish scheduled for Siltcoos Lagoon were stocked in Cleawox Lake instead. S I U S L AW R I V E R : Steelhead Winter steelhead fishing has improved.
