SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, MARCH 10, 2018 Alzheimer’s Association to hold back-to-back classes The Alzheimer’s Association Oregon Chapter will offer back-to-back educa- tional classes at the Siuslaw Public Library in Florence. The two classes will be held on Wednesday, March 14, in the Bromley Room, 1460 Ninth St., and are open to the public. “The Basics” will run from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. If you or someone you know is affected by Alzheimer’s disease or demen- tia, it’s time to learn the facts. This program provides infor- mation on detection, causes and risk factors, stages of the disease, treatment and much more. “Dementia Conversations” will take place from 1 to 2:30 p.m. When someone is showing signs of dementia, it’s time to talk. Often, conversations with family about changing behav- iors can be challenging and uncomfortable. This program provides tips for breaking the ice with your family so you can address some of the most common issues that are diffi- cult to discuss: going to the doctor for a diagnosis or med- ical treatment, deciding when to stop driving and making legal and financial plans for future care. DAV seeks volunteer drivers The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) is in desperate need of volunteer drivers who are willing to drive veterans to Portland in the DAV van for medical appointments. The drive is about four hours to Portland, four hours for the return trip, plus four hours waiting for veteras at the hospital. This is a total of about 330 miles and 12 hours.
