Siltcoos Lagoon was not stocked the week of Feb. 5 due to low levels of dis- solved oxygen. Fish scheduled for Siltcoos Lagoon were stocked in Cleawox Lake instead. SIUSLAW I S IT A SPORT ? A fter years of debate, the criteria for an activity to be classi- fied as a “sport” must meet three criteria: 1) A human activity involving skill and exertion. 2) Governed by a set of rules or customs. 3) Undertaken competi- tively and capable of achieving a result. (win- ners/losers) In elementary school, my friends and I would draw a three foot in diameter circle in the dirt. We would all toss five marbles into the circle. Rock, paper, and scissors decided the first shooter. Each shooter tries to knock marbles out of the circle. If successful, their turn continues until a marble fails to cross the line or the shooter’s marble left the circle; shooters got to keep all marbles they knocked out. The game ended when all marbles were out. This was my first sport and I won a box of marbles that year. My next sport was four- square. I see by the squares at Rhododendron Elementary the game con- tinues today. The rules are simple: Catch a ball directed to your square before it bounces twice — or you are out. I played almost the entire recess most days. Though most schoolyard games are just for fun, I say many meet the criteria of a sport. Exertion, rules and a result are all present. My early games were RIVER: Steelhead Winter steelhead fishing has improved. Rain over the weekend has raised the river level and got fish moving again. Siuslaw’s line-up will also include junior Madison Reynolds, who placed third at district last season in the shot put as a sophomore, behind a pair of Far West League seniors who have graduated — creating the potential for a top finish at district this season. But despite not having stand- outs like Clark Hooper, Jack Pickell, Carissa Oliver, Celie Mans and Destine Tatum in this season’s line-up, an influx of talented freshmen combined with solid returners spread throughout the sophomore, junior and senior levels could set a tone that is anything but mediocre. For the girls, second-place finishes last season in the 1,500 and 3,000 meter events at district for then-fresh- man Hannah Rannow bodes well for Siuslaw, particularly with senior Kayle Graham returning in both hurdles events. Also returning is junior Madison Reynolds, who finished third in the Far West League in the shot put last season, behind a pair of seniors who have since graduated. In addition, the girls team will get an injection of freshman talent from Brea Blankenship, Gracie Freudenthal and Andrea Osbon, all of whom were mid- dle school district champions last year as eighth graders. And though the only returning state qualifier for the boys team is current school-record holder in the discus and javelin Trent Reavis, who is still on the mend from a basketball injury, Siuslaw still fields a group of strong performers from last season. Among them are sophomore Ryan Rendon-Padilla in the javelin and fel- low sophomore Kiger Johnson in the 800-meter event. See TRACK 2B S PORTS Calendar • MARCH 14 SHS/MHS BASEBALL HOSTS P. HILL 4 P.M. Anglers can now search by water- body for a complete list of stockings in that lake or pond for the entire year. Users can also search by date for all stockings in Oregon’s six Fishing Zones for a certain time period. Previously, all stockings were listed in a PDF document organized by stock- ing date, making it difficult to see a waterbody’s full stocking schedule for the year. “‘When are you stocking my pond or lake?’ is one of the most popular ques- tions we get at ODFW. Some anglers even plan their vacations around it,” said David Lane, Acting Deputy Administrator, I&E, ODFW. “Now, it’s much easier to find the stocking See TROUT 2B HOSTS SUTHERLIN 4 P .
