Th e Oregon Dunes Restoration Col- laborative (ODRC) is a diverse part- nership of key stakeholders and com- munity members who care about the future of Oregon’s dunes. Th e group includes people and organizations who care about the ecology, plants, wildlife, recreation and tourism the dunes support. Th e Oregon dunes ecosystem is a unique, dynamic landscape, where movement of the sand by wind is criti- cal to maintaining native ecology and historic recreation opportunities. In the last several decades, nonnative invasive plants have been rapidly sta- bilizing the dunes, closing in much of the open sand and altering natural geological and ecological processes. Th e general consensus, among recre- ation users, land managers, scientists and community members, is that ac- tion needs to be taken now to restore dunes function before they are entirely lost. Rare plant communities and the threatened western snowy plover re- quire open sand to survive, and it is the same open sand that brings many thousands of visitors to the area each year for the range of unique recreation opportunities it provides. Th e ODRC has developed a strategy for restoring the dunes, which identi- fi es key restoration goals and priority areas based on a set of criteria jointly developed with the Siuslaw National Forest. Th e broad strategy covers the entire restoration area, from north of Florence to Coos Bay. Th e goals fo- Gray Day Home Heat cus on restoring landscape-scale pro- cesses, restoring smaller sites that are especially important for diff erent rea- sons and preserving those areas that retain some of the natural ecology. A new book has been released, “Re- storing Oregon’s Dunes: Th e bid to save a national treasure.” Developed as a coff ee-table-style book, Restor- ing Oregon’s Dunes tells the story of the coastal dunes, their history, why they’re disappearing and the partner- ship that has formed to try and save them. Along with the release of the book, the group has also launched a website, SaveOregonDunes.org, to promote public awareness and in- volvement in dunes restoration.
