SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2018 THESIUSLAWNEWS . COM ❘ ❘ / SIUSLAWNEWS 3 B @ SIUSLAWNEWS Community News ‘Just One Drop’ documentary comes to City Lights Cinemas Wellspring Clinic and City Lights Cinemas will bring the interesting and informative “Just One Drop” film to town on Sunday, Feb. 25, at 2:30 p.m. Homeopathy is a 200-year- old system of medicine that is used worldwide. According to a 2017 report, hundreds of thousands of physicians and over 500 million consumers use homeopathic medicines around the globe. Homeopathic medicine is widely regarded as an effective medical practice with an extraordinary record of safety. Homeopathy is especially popular in Europe, India and South America, where many national health services provide homeopathic treatment along with conventional medicine. A recent Harvard study states that since 2007 the number of U.S. households using homeopathy has increased by 15 percent. If homeopathy is so popular worldwide, why is still consid- ered so controversial in the practice of medicine, especially in the U.S? Since most homeo- pathic medicines are regulated as over-the-counter drugs, why does the FDA repeatedly seek to further restrict homeopathy's place in the healthcare system? “Just One Drop” explores these and other questions, including what homeopathy is and is not — by everyday peo- ple, skeptics, proponents and some of the world's finest homeopaths. Organizers hope to see you at City Lights Cinemas on Feb. 25, when Dr. Mark Immel will give an introduction before the film, and will conduct a brief Q & A session after the show. Standard ticketing applies, and are available at the door or at www.citylightscinemas.com. The movie trailer is available to view at thewellspringclin- ic.com. International quilt show in Yachats A display of the 2016 International Challenge Art Quilt Show will be at the Yachats Commons on Feb. 24 and 25. The theme is “World Heritage Sites.” The concept for the International Quilt Challenge was born in 2003, after Izumi Takamori, owner of The Pin Cushion, a quilting store in Tokyo, Japan, met Sue Cutsogeorge of Eugene, Ore., during a quilters tour of Japan. Since then, Takamori and her quilting friends have chal- lenged artists in various coun- tries. Themes of past exhibits have included the alphabet, world currency, world festi- vals, world painters, world fairy tales and now, for the sec- ond time, World Heritage Sites. The current group of quilts debuted at the November 2016 Handmade Makers Show in Yokohama. Since that time, they have toured Japan and South Korea, and are now tour- ing the US. A large number of the US quilts have been made by fiber artists from the Pacific Northwest, including Yachats artist Ruth Bass. Quilters in each of three nations, the U.S., Japan and South Korea, were given a list of 30 World Heritage Sites. Thirty quilters from each nation represented one of the heritage sites in a piece of fiber art. The result is 90 small quilts, hung vertically on pan- The Florence Public Art Committee has created an exciting new program to enhance the beauty and livabil- ity of the local community by regularly introducing original outdoor art into Florence to create a unique sense of place and enhance community identi- ty.
