SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2018 5 A LETTERS A DIFFERENT VIEW ON IMMIGRATION I have been a small busi- ness owner. For 25 years I was a director and operations man- ager for companies that employed immigrants as the main part of their work force. I worked with Puerto Ricans, Haitians, Vietnamese and Latinos in locations from Bedford Stuyvesant, NY, to south central Los Angeles, Oxnard and Agoura, Calif. When those companies were hiring, the chance of hir- ing a relative of those already Breaking news, photo galleries and MORE! Visit the Siuslaw News online at WWW.THESIUSLAWNEWS.COM employed was very high. The employee who made the rec- ommendation of family or friend made sure that the hiree had the right skills and tem- perament for the job. They often were involved in training the new employee, and the new worker appreciat- ed the opportunity and demonstrated it through hard work. The work ethic of those minorities was such that you would find men and women who didn’t miss a day of work for 10-25 years. Many developed skills as machinists, electronic techs, supervisors, etc. My experience has shown me that if people are treated respectfully and compensated according to the level of con- tribution they make to the company, they will reward you with loyalty and honesty. We hear the words today Buckwald AccounƟ ng & ConsulƟ ng, PC about “chain immigrants” made to sound like they are part of a “chain gang.” I speak of family people who have contributed to the strength of our country. —Ron Preisler Florence R ESPONSE TO AN OLD U.S. M ARINE I am compelled to respond to Tony Cavarno’s Letter to the Editor (“Thoughts from an old US Marine,” Feb. 17). As an old veteran of the U.S. Army Security Agency who served in Korea, I won- der if Mr. Cavarno would like the current generation to know the myths or the facts about this country’s imperialistic venture in Korea. Would he want them to know that conquering those hills was a repetitious non- strategic total waste of human life? Or that the South Korean government that the U.S. was supposedly defending charged rent for the land used for mili- tary bases? (which U.S. tax- payers paid for.) I suggest he read the book by U.S. Marine Corps Major General Smedly Butler, “War is a Racket,” and think about President Eisenhower’s com- ment on the war in 1951: “Small attacks on small hills would not win the war.” —Bill Durst Florence D ISAPPOINTED WITH M C K EOWN We are greatly disappointed and outraged that our Rep. Caddy McKeown voted “no” on HB 4145, the Domestic Violence Victim Protection Act, becoming the only Democrat to join Republicans in opposing this bill. When our delegation from Florence met with her in Salem on Moms Demand Action Advocacy Day, she raised only two technical issues that in our opinion were not sufficient reasons to oppose the bill. We would like to know specifically her rea- son for opposing this bill and others like it in the past. We have supported her can- didacy not only with our votes but with hard work in the community. This year with the growing gun violence throughout our country, we will no longer support candi- dates that fail to support sensi- ble gun violence prevention measures. We signed Gabby Gifford’s pledge: “I promise that I will vote courage in November and support candidates who will stand up to the gun lobby and take action to make our communities safer from gun violence,” and have encour- aged others to do the same. In all future elections, we will follow the lead set by President Obama when he passionately stated in an Op- Ed in the New York Times, “I will not campaign for, vote for or support any candidate, even in my own party, who does not support common-sense gun reform.” We encourage others to do the same. —Mike and Pat Allen Florence W HEN WILL THEY EVER LEARN ? The recent news regarding the latest tragic school shoot- ing in Florida makes me sick. Here we go again. As a parent, I always worry that it can hap- pen here and feel deeply for the parents who are facing the death of their child. I also read that the National Rifle Association is being investigated for funneling laundered Russian money into the presidential campaign. Oregon’s Representative Ron Wyden is working on the fore- front of the investigation, to make information available to the public. Then I read the ad in Siuslaw News about the up- coming Fraudville fundraiser for our local Boys and Girls Club and held at the casino every year. The newspaper just ran a long story about the needs of the BGC, and my children have been in excel- lent programs there — so I support them fully. But the big raffle item this year is... a 9mm pistol? What happened to raffling off handmade quilts or roman- tic weekend get-aways? Now we have to raffle off a gun? The irony here is huge. Personally, I would gladly give up my constitutional right to own a gun if I knew it would prevent tens of thou- sands of gun deaths per year here in the U.S. But I also have almost no hope for this country changing its gun laws. Certainly not if our NRA is funneling Russian laundered money. What’s that refrain in the old song, “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” “When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?” —Mary Beth Rawlins Florence 777 Maple St, STE B • Florence, OR 97439 (541) 997-7173 Let me Showcase your property.
