SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2018 Little from 1B I am listing the players with their scoring average and some team moments for that year. I will also add that the overall record for these teams was 64 wins and 50 losses. The 2000 and the 2002 teams each had 9- 3 records. The best record of 9-2 was the 1998 team • 1991 — Tristen Hartzell averaged 8.8 points per game. His high-point game was 16 Viks from 1B heading into the half, 34-27. The Bulldogs came out strong in the third quarter, going on a 7-0 run to cut the Viks’ lead to just one point, 34- 33. North Bend stayed within a basket throughout the period, with scoring from Rollin, King and Hickson maintaining a 3 B points twice. This team lost to North Bend by 43 points the first time and came back to beat them 52-51 in the rematch. A team record of 9-8. • 1992 — J.R. Hylton aver- aged 7.8 points per game. His high point game was 18 points. This team beat the team from the south on their home court for a team record of 10-5. • 1994 — Will Vermilyea averaged 8.5 points. His high point game was 15 points. They defeated Myrtle Crest twice. A team record of 5-9. • 1996 — Tyler May aver- aged 13.4 points per game. His top game was 20 points. This team won both games against the team from the south. A team record of 5-5. • 1997 — Brandon Little averaged 11.8 points per game. His high game was 19 points. With four 3-point shots in the second half from Little they defeated Bandon 66-65. A team record of 7-5. • 1997 — Raf Eanni aver- aged 11.7 points per game. His high game was 21 points. He scored the last-second basket that beat Bandon 66-65 on a rebound put-back. A team record of 7-5. The 1997 team is the only team with two players averaging over 10 points. • 1998 — Josh Thomas Dotson averaged 15.5 points per game. His high game was 27 points. This team went 4-1 against the Coos Bay area schools. A team record of 9-2. • 1999 — Michael Pitcher averaged 9.3 points per game. His high game was 19 points. After losing its first nine games, this team won two of its last four. They battled each game. A team record of 2-10. • 2000 — Ben Voogd aver- aged 19.8 points. He had a game high of 28 points. His team also went 4-1 against the Bay area schools. A team record of 9-3. • 2002 — Trevor May aver- aged 11.3 points per game. His high game was 25 points. He did score over 50 points when Coach Gray borrowed him for a B tournament. This team also beat the team from the south two times. A team record of 9- 3. These individual accom- plishments could not have occurred without support from teammates. Middle school bas- ketball programs are a building block for the future of high school programs at schools like Siuslaw and Mapleton. I am quite sure I missed a player or two in my top 10. To those of you who played for me... Thank you. slim 46-43 lead to start the fourth quarter. With 2:24 remaining in reg- ulation, the Bulldogs tied the game at 48-48 with an offen- sive rebound, then moved into their first lead with 8 seconds to go after scoring and earning a trip to the foul line. North Bend missed the extra attempt, with Siuslaw getting the rebound and calling a quick timeout to stop the clock with 4 seconds remaining. King pressed his way into the paint and scored a buzzer beater to tie the game at 50-50 and force the game into over- time. Wynn opened the extra 4- minute period with a freethrow, followed a full minute later with a basket from along the baseline from Hickson to move ahead by 3. The Bulldogs missed two charity shots with 1:15 on the clock, then scored on the return to stay within a basket of retaking Siuslaw’s 53-52 lead. Wynn and Rollin each scored in the last 40 seconds, with Hickson going to the line and sinking a freethrow to secure the win, 58-55. The Bulldogs launched a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer, but it rolled off the rim as the game ended. The win keeps Siuslaw in the running for a potential wildcard spot in the play-offs, with the final game of the reg- ular season being played last night at South Umpqua (0-8) after press deadlines. Hickson led scoring with 29 points, including six 3-point- ers. King had 10 points, and the Viks got 8 points from Brandt, 6 points from Wynn, and 5 from Rollin to lead scor- ing. Siuslaw’s fate in a post-sea- son appearance will be deter- mined by Monday after final state rankings are announced. Fishing SIUSLAW RIVER: Steelhead, wild coho salmon retention.
