This event will be a rare glimpse into interna- tional diplomacy with the coauthor of the Pentagon Papers. Gurtov recently spoke at a sold-out City Lights Cinemas event and screening for the Oscar-nominated film “The Post.” “It is unusual to have some- one of Mel Gurtov’s stature as a writer and thinker about international affairs who can also make that topic so interest- All items furniture lighting cases and smalls 30-50% off Stop by and find your Treasure! 494 Highway 101 at Rhododendron 541-997-8104 Wednesday - Saturday Noon - 5 pm Author Mel Gurtov will be signing copies of his latest book, “Engaging Adver- saries,” at City Lights Cinemas on March 1. COURTESY IMAGE ing,” said City Lights Cinemas co-owner Michael Falter. “And with his new book ‘Engaging Adversaries’ about to be released, this felt like a great way to get the Siuslaw Public Library involved as well. I believe ‘The Final Year’ is the perfect film to tie it all togeth- er.” “The Final Year” is a fasci- nating glimpse into the world of international negotiation as the camera follows President Barack Obama’s foreign policy team during “The Final Year” of his tenure. The documentary follows Secretary of State John Kerry, United Nations Ambassador Samantha Power and Deputy National Security advisor and speechwriter Ben Rhodes as they put out fires around the globe. Deadwood resident Gurtov is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Portland State University. He has worked at the RAND Corporation, where he coau- thored the Pentagon Papers, and has published over 20 books and numerous articles on East Asian affairs, U.S. foreign policy, and global politics from a human-interest perspective in addition to serving as a Senior Fulbright Scholar in Japan and South Korea. His newest book, “Engaging Adversaries,” was published in January 2018 and explores how potential conflicts in world pol- itics can be overcome. The book examines how negotia- tion and diplomacy progressed under Obama with Cuba and Iran, and probes its potential for U.S.-Russian and U.S.- North Korean relations and other critical hotspots. Copies of the book will be available to purchase at the event. Anyone who purchases a copy of the book prior to the screening of “The Final Year” will receive a free ticket to watch the movie and attend the Q&A session with Professor Gurtov after the event. Advance tickets to attend the film are already available at City Lights Cinemas, and all sales from purchases of the book will benefit the Siuslaw Public Library. “I can’t thank Michael Falter and Mel Gurtov enough for allowing the Siuslaw Public Library to cosponsor this pro- gram,” said library director Meg Spencer. “The film and the book are both about learn- ing and exploration, just like the library.” All proceeds raised from the evening will help support the Siuslaw Public Library District’s roof replacement fund.
