SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2018 FPD to particpate in Feb. 4 Superbowl DUII enforcement The Florence Police Department has received grant funding for additional DUII enforcement on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 4. These funds are made available to the city from Oregon Impact, which administers DUII grant fund- ing in Oregon. Law enforcement agencies throughout Oregon and the rest of the United States will be participating in this nation- wide effort to get impaired drivers off the street. High vis- ibility enforcement, accom- plished by increasing the num- ber of officers on the streets aggressively seeking out impaired drivers, is designed to deter people from driving after they have been drinking. Data received from NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) showed there were 10,497 deaths from alcohol impaired crashes in 2016 (154 in Oregon). That’s equal to near- ly 29 people each day or one person every 50 minutes. Approximately one third of all (37,461) traffic crash fatali- ties in the U.S. involved driv- ers with a blood alcohol con- centration of 0.08 percent or higher. For additional information visit www.nhtsa.gov. The Florence Police Department wants the commu- nity to enjoy the Super Bowl and, if you will be drinking, plan on not driving. Plan a safe ride home before you begin drinking. Designate a sober driver ahead of time. If you drink, do not drive for any reason. Call a taxi, phone a sober friend or family mem- ber. If someone you know has been drinking, do not let that person get behind the wheel. If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact local law enforcement. Continuing Education Scholarship being offered by Delta Gamma Delta Gamma of ESA is offering a scholarship of up to $1000 for continuing educa- tion.
