SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 31, 2018 Siuslaw News gathers recipes for new collection Siuslaw News has been the region’s newspaper for 128 years. In that time, restaurants have come and gone, trades have shifted and the area’s demographics have changed, but the area’s taste for fresh seafood, locally grown pro- duce and handcrafted meals remains. In 2018, Siuslaw News wants to showcase some of those recipes in a new collec- tion. This is a chance for com- munity members to submit recipes for entrées, appetizers, soups, cocktails, side dishes and more. People are encouraged to share recipes of their favorite local and regional cuisine, recipes handed down from family, the best use of season- al produce and even tips on where to find foraged foods. Businesses and restaurants may also submit their famous or unforgettable recipes. Once complete, this bound collection will be available for sale at the Siuslaw News. Deadline for Submission is Thursday, Feb. 18. Recipes should fit into one of the following categories: appetizers and beverages; soups and salads; vegetables and side dishes; main dishes; breads and rolls; desserts; cookies and candy; and “this and that.” For more information or to fill out the recipe form, go to thesiuslawnews.com/recipe- collection. In addition, Siuslaw News is seeking volunteers to test these recipe submissions. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, call Office Assistant Katie Libby at 541-902-3526. Library Tidings by Kevin Mittge Book Review “The Party” By Robyn Harding Sweet 16. It’s an exciting coming-of- age, a milestone and a rite of passage. Jeff and Kim Sanders plan on throwing a party for their daughter, Hannah — a good girl with excellent grades and nice friends. Rather than an extravagant, indulgent affair, they invite four girls over for pizza, cake, movies and a sleepover. What could possibly go wrong? But things do go wrong, hor- rifically so, and Hannah’s party quickly turns into the stuff of nightmares. After a tragic acci- dent occurs, Jeff and Kim’s comfortable life in a wealthy San Francisco suburb begins to fall apart. In the ugly aftermath, friends become enemies, dark secrets are revealed in the Sanders’ marriage, and the truth about their perfect daughter, Hannah, is revealed. “The Party” takes us behind the façade of the ideal family, exposing the lies, betrayals, and moral lapses that occur behind closed doors — and the secrets that children and parents keep 5 A will be available at the library on Mondays and Thursdays through April 12, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a special final day of tax preparation on Saturday, April 14. Blind Date with a Book Are you ready to take part in the library’s fifth-annual Blind Date with a Book program? For the adventurous reader this program offers the opportu- nity to let fate take a hand in selecting what you read. The program works like this. Select a plainly wrapped book from a selection of books at the library. Read the book — or at least make an honest and fair attempt at doing so — then return the book with a “blind date” evaluation form. The forms, besides being used to recommend new and wonder- ful books to readers, will also be used for prize drawings. The point is to take a risk and expand your reading interests. Sound fun? The program starts Thursday, Feb. 1 and books can be selected up through Wednesday, Feb. 28. The drawing will take place on Thursday, March 15 allowing readers time to finish and evalu- ate those last blind dates. Get Techy Join a library staffer for some techno help. Bring all your ques- tions, or even your own device, on Tuesday, Feb. 6, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. for an open computer lab. Then on Tuesday, Feb. 27, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., it’s all about email.
