2 B SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 31, 2018 Vikings bucket of the period for a slim 12-10 lead that South Umpqua held until halfway through the second quarter. Following a freethrow from senior Jake Hickson and offen- sive boards from senior Jared Brandt and King, the Viks tied things at 17-17 with 5:13 remain- ing in the half. Hickson gave the Viks their first lead since early in the first quarter, which the Lancers quick- ly tied. From there, South Umpqua went on a 7-0 run that included a 3-pointer. Freshman guard Jacob Foskett scored with 44 seconds on the clock, then senior John Rollin managed a buzzer beater to keep Siuslaw within 3 points entering the half, 23-36. The third period was essential- ly a draw, with the Vikings chip- ping away at the Lancer’s lead but never quite closing the gap. Trailing 33-37 to start the fourth quarter, Siuslaw scored on a steal from Brandt to put the Viks within a single basket, 35- 37. The two teams traded baskets for the next 5 minutes until King tied the game at 41-41 with a freethrow as the clock cleared 3:00. A full minute passed as offens- es at both ends of the court were stymied. A pair of charity shots from Brandt put Siuslaw ahead 43-41, only to have the Lancers retake the lead on a long 3-point- er, 44-43. With :48 remaining and South Umpqua ahead 46-45, both teams clamored for a loose ball that officials deemed to be a jump-ball possession. The Viks owned the posses- sion arrow and called a time out. Coming back, Siuslaw drove the court and sent Hickson into the Fishing Steelhead returning to Siuslaw from 1B from 1B throughout the state. The tags also can be mailed to any ODFW office. W INTER STEELHEAD : WATER DEPENDENT Winter Steelhead are return- ing to the Siuslaw basin in large numbers. Last week, 128 adult steelhead returned to the ODFW trap on Whittaker Creek. The trap is constructed, maintained and checked by The Florence Salmon Trout Enhancement Program (STEP) under the direction of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. Volunteers from the Florence STEP group checks Siuslaw Brea Blankenship, a 5-foot-3- inch point guard, led scoring for Siuslaw for a combined 16 points. While Freudenthal scored 10 points and nabbed 7 rebounds to go with a pair of blocked shots from inside the key, Blankenship drained a pair of long 3-pointers from outside the arc to round out a double threat against South Umpqua. Taking what appeared to be the final possession of the game, the Lancers worked the clock, hoping for the final, game-win- ning attempt. Instead, Rollin came up with a steal and went coast-to-coast before being fouled on his way in for a lay-up. Rollin sank one of his two attempts, giving Siuslaw a 48-46 lead with 3 seconds remaining. The Lancers made one last attempt, putting a shot up from just outside the arc, but King was able to get his fingertips on the ball just enough to deflect it off course as it hit the rim at the buzzer. King led scoring with 22 points. Brandt had 11 points, Hickson had 6, senior Dylan McGallian had a 3-pointer, Rollin had 3 points, and Siuslaw got 2 points each from Wynn, Foskett and sophomore Caleb Hennessee. The Viks are back on the hard- wood Friday at Marshfield, kick- ing off the second half of the Far West League season at 7:30 p.m. starting to be caught in the lower river. Successful anglers will: 1) adjust their gear and tack- le for current conditions, and/or 2) be ready to hit the water when water conditions improve — usually once water levels start to drop after a good rain. Check out the zone reports for the best weekend possibilities. from 1B Trout stocking is complete for the year. Cape Meares, Town, Coffenbury, Lost and Sunset lakes were stocked with “trophy” rainbow trout in late September. Cedar Creek Hatchery has stocked over 160 surplus sum- mer steelhead in Town Lake near Pacific City so far this fall. These fish get fairly active in the lake and offer a unique fish- ing experience. Once in the lake they are considered “trout” and do not require a Combined Angling Tag. Anglers are reminded, how- ever, that only one trout per day Let Paul show you a new car or truck. Stop by today! MID COAST LAKES: Olalla Reservoir has been stocked with about 100 surplus summer steelhead this season. These fish get fairly active in the lake and offer a unique fish- ing experience. Once in the lake they are considered “trout” and do not require a Combined Angling Tag. Anglers are reminded, how- ever, that only one trout per day over 20 inches may be retained, and these fish will all be in that size range. Mid coast lakes been stocked with trout throughout the spring. Trout stocking has ended for the year but there still should be fish around to catch. ALSEA RIVER: Steelhead, SALMON final — with the Lady Vikings leading the way. Siuslaw even- tually faced Cottage Grove for the championship and came away with the district title. Tournament all-stars includ- ed Hurley and Faith Coday, along with district tournament MVP recognition for Abby Coday. For the Viking boys, it was also a good day, with Neil DeVera being named to the tournament all-star roster, and been slowing down, but a few fish are still available. Anglers are reminded that there is no wild coho salmon retention. WILSON RIVER: Chinook, steelhead Fall Chinook fishing is slow had a team-high 9 rebounds for the Lady Viks to help battle the boards against the Lady Lancers. Other scoring included 4 points each from freshman Lindsey Long and sophomore Mia Collins, along with 4 points and 4 rebounds from senior Marika White. Siuslaw had the night off Tuesday, but returns to the court this Friday at Marshfield as the second half of the league seasons gets underway. Tipoff for Friday’s game is at 6 p.m. fellow Siuslaw senior Patrick Hill named the boys’ tourna- ment MVP. The Vikings faced tough competition from start to fin- ish. After leading the 10 game qualifying round, the Vikings finished just 13 pins short of reaching a spot among the top three finalists, placing fourth overall. The Lady Vikings will get a short break before heading to Klamath Falls to compete in the state tournament Feb. 23- 25. to fair. There should be fish available throughout the sys- tem. Bobber fishing bait, back- bouncing, back-trolling plugs or divers and bait, or casting spinners can all be effective methods. RIVER: Steelhead, Chinook The Salmon River IS open for wild and hatchery steel- head. Wild winter steelhead can be retained on the Salmon River. Daily and annual bag limit on wild winter steelhead are 1 per day and 3 per year. Fall Chinook fishing has been slowing down, but a few fish are still available. When the traps are worked, the steelhead are each checked see if they are ready to spawn. The fish that are ready to spawn are live spawned and released down stream to go back to the ocean.
