Death from 1A County Search and Rescue, responded with several volun- teers to assist with recovering the body of 35-year-old Arturo Toral-Pacheco of Springfield. Recovery efforts took volun- teers approximately 200 yards City from 1A Henry said. “He wasn’t more sincere than any of the other candidates, but he was more confident in his background and looking forward. He will provide a great service to the community.” According to his applica- tion, Woodbury has experi- ence working at Home Depot, as a white-collar crime inves- tigator and as the owner and operator of the Florence Grocery Outlet. He currently serves on the Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue Board of Directors and on the Florence Urban Renewal Agency (FURA), though he will not be able to retain the FURA position once he becomes a city councilor. Woodbury is also involved with communi- ty groups such as the Boys and Girls Club of Western Lane County, Florence Food Share, Friends of the Florence Events Center and Habitat for Humanity. Woodbury described his vision for Florence as “mov- ing forward to improve city services and quality of life for its citizens. This is another way to support our ‘City in Motion.’” During the public comment period at Monday’s meeting, Deadlines for press releases are Mondays and Thursdays by noon. COM . down a steep embankment. “It is very early in the investigation and we are still working to determine the events leading up to the inci- dent,” said Sgt. Carrie Carver of the Lane Country Sheriff’s Office, who added that the initial investigation indicates that Toral-Pacheco likely fell from an elevated position. The Lane County Sheriff’s Office was continuing to con- duct the death investigation with the Lane County Medical Examiner’s Office after press deadlines Tuesday evening. “Our thoughts go out to Toral-Pacheco’s family and friends after this tragic inci- dent,” said Carver. Florence resident Katie Prosser said she sat in the audience during the inter- views and thanked the council for its choice to appoint Woodbury. “I think you guys made a great decision, and a lot of us in the community are super happy about it,” Prosser said. “We are especially pleased, as we think this person will be able to put their personal pol- itics aside to make this a bet- ter place for all of us to live.” Several of the candidates attended the meeting. One, Maureen Miltenberger, said she supported the process, but felt that parts of her interview were a personal attack because of her involvement with the Florence Area Democratic Club and a three- year term on the Canby City Council. “I believe the citizens of this city have a right to be heard and supported, even if they have different political views or differing views on anything that can come up in front of the council,” Miltenberger said. “I certainly hope that as the council moves forward, all the deci- sions made by the council and the mayor look at every deci- sion or every person, and lis- ten to the things they have to say, not just turn them away or make them feel badly.” This was the first time in several years where the city council had to fill a vacancy, so city staff reviewed the process both with the coun- cilors and city attorneys. “It was uncharted territory for us, but it is a process that is now set up for the future. I think it went smoothly,” Henry said. Woodbury’s appointment was by unanimous vote of Henry and councilors Joshua Greene, Susy Lacer and Ron Preisler. He will be sworn into the position at a future Florence City Council meet- ing. Henry also made appoint- ments to the following boards: Airport Advisory Committee — George Henry, Richard Holcombe and Dick Markee Audit Committee — Jimmie Hart Budget Committee — Leonard Larson and Wayne Sharp Planning Commission — Eric Hauptman, Phil Tarvin and Sandra Young Public Art Committee — Ron Hildenbrand and Harlen Springer Appointments to the Economic Development Committee, Environmental Management Advisory Committee, FURA and Transit Advisory Committee were postponed due to the city council recruitment process and committee code reviews.
