PHOTOS BY NED HICKSON/SIUSLAW NEWS Boys and girls from Florence, Mapleton and Reedsport are between ages 8 and 13 years old participated in the annual Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot this past Saturday in the Siuslaw Elementary School gym. Each hoop shooter was given 10 free throws to qualify for the final shoot-off of 15 additional free throws. The top boy and girl finish- ers from each division qualified for the district-wide shoot out in Seaside, Ore., set for Feb. 4. Those who make the finals will advance to the statewide competition in Milwaukee, Ore. on Feb. 11. Final Results were unavail- able at press time. SHS WRESTLING AT C.G ROVE I NV . DAY 1 Viks solid on Sutherlin mats B Y N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw News Siuslaw brought six wrestlers to last Saturday’s 15-team Sutherlin Wrestling Classic in Sutherlin, where senior 120-pounder Richard Huff swept his weight bracket for his third-consecutive tournament championship. Along the way, Huff beat Cottage Grove’s Chance Ralston by technical fall, 17-0, and pinned Griffin Gutches of North Medford in the first round (1:23.) From there, Huff went on to edge out North Medford’s 6A wrestler Chase Mitchell, 7-6, for the title. Siuslaw junior 160-pounder Riley Jennings had the team’s sec- ond-highest finish after placing See WRESTLING 3B lar season undefeated after leading the qualifying round. From there, they defeated North Bend in the semi- finals, 329-259. L AKE : 50 M APLETON : 46 M OHAWK : 50 It was a tough week for the Sailor boys basketball team, which kicked off the week with a 18-50 loss at Triangle Lake. “We knew going in that it was going to be a hard one to win on the road,” said Mapleton coach Eric Wolgamott. “We swtiched up our defense to try to take away their two best players and did a pretty good job.” JJ Neece, Tanner Wilson, Cole Spencer and Evan Moso stepped up the pressure, switching off on the Lakers’ guards to keep second- and third-shot See SAILORS 2B Siuslaw bowlers head to district competition Sunday The Viking girls and boys bowling teams finished the regular season over the weekend, competing at Firs Bowl in Eugene, where Siuslaw will return this Sunday for district competition. During last weekend’s tournament, the Lady Vikings finished off the regu- 12:43pm / 1.5 Grove, 381-323. Meanwhile, the boys had both their JV and varsity teams in competition after the JV team qualified the previ- ous week at Cottage Grove. The JV team did well, finishing 10th overall. The varsity team stayed among the top four heading into the the semi0finals, where they defeated Marshfield, 345- 330 before taking the championship over Springfield, 345-313.
