B Y N ED H ICKSON On the Bite Siuslaw News SHS GIRLS : 31 BHHS GIRLS : 56 SHS BOYS : 49 BHHS BOYS : 53 In the second half, however, the Bruins were able to visit the charity line nearly twice as many times as the Vikings, going 10-for-22 compared to Siuslaw’s 4 points on 7 attempts. Junior post Alyssa Richards was able to score a double-double on the night, claiming 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Vikings in both categories. Siuslaw’s basketball teams kicked off a week on the road last Tuesday, making the long trip to Brookings- Harbor for what undoubtedly seemed like an even longer trip home after los- ing both match-ups with the Bruins. The girls opened the double-bill, keeping pace with Brookings-Harbor (2-0) throughout the first half to enter the break with a narrow 1-point deficit. The Viking boys were in North Bend, where the Viks had a tough time. “With all their success this season, Siuslaw has a large tar- get on its back,” said bowling coordinator and coach Dusty Anderson. “Whenever we make the semifinals, we always get the other team’s best shot.” Unfortunately, this past weekend the Vikings’ opponents got the better of them. It was still a successful weekend for the Vikings, who finished fourth place. Meanwhile, the Viking JV boys were in Cottage Grove, where they earned another first-place finish. The Lady Vikings were also in Cottage Grove, looking to extend their winning streak to six straight tournament victo- ries. Siuslaw started out strong by winning the first two games with scores of 234 and 210. “That let the rest of the teams know the Lady Vikings were on a mission,” said Anderson. Siuslaw finished first in qualifying round by out scoring the field by 356 pins. Moving on to the semifinals, the Lady Vikings defeated North Bend before facing Willamette in the finals. Siuslaw defeated Willamette for its sixth-consecutive tournament championship. NED HICKSON/SIUSLAW NEWS See High Tide SIUSLAW 2B WINTER TROUT FISHING Don’t let your trout fish- ing season end just because the cold weather has arrived. Here are just some of the weekend opportuni- ties from this week’s Rec Report: • Several ponds and lakes in the Willamette Zone just took delivery of large brood trout. • In the Southeast Zone, the Ana River has been kicking out trout in the 12- to 16-inch range. The Blitzen also has great year- round fishing. • Expo and Reinhart ponds in the Southwest Zone were recently stocked with legal and larger trout last week. • The Central Zone has several popular winter trout fisheries including the Deschutes, Fall and Metolius rivers.
