Winter steelhead water watch This time of year, water conditions for winter steelhead fishing can vac- illate between too low and clear, and too high and muddy. Successful anglers will: 1) adjust their gear and tackle for Viks from 1B of the first half, with senior John Rollin posting a long 3-pointer for the first score of the game and a 3-0 lead. NORTH COAST LAKES: Trout stocking is complete for the year. Cape Meares, Town, Coffenbury, Lost and Sunset lakes were stocked with “trophy” rainbow trout in late September. Cedar Creek Hatchery has stocked over 160 surplus summer steelhead in Town Lake near Pacific City so far this fall. These fish get fairly active in the lake and offer a unique fishing expe- rience. Once in the lake they are con- sidered “trout” and do not require a Combined Angling Tag. Anglers are reminded, however, that only one trout per day over 20- inches may be retained, and these fish will all be in that size range. MID COAST LAKES: Olalla Reservoir has been stocked with about 100 surplus summer steel- head this season. These fish get fairly active in the lake and offer a unique fishing experience. Once in the lake they are consid- ered “trout” and do not require a Combined Angling Tag. Anglers are reminded, however, that only one trout per day over 20 inches may be retained, and these fish will all be in that size range. Mid coast lakes been stocked with trout throughout the spring. Trout stocking has ended for the year but there still should be fish around to catch. Wild winter steelhead can be retained on the Salmon River. Daily and annual bag limit on wild winter steelhead are 1 per day and 3 per year. In the opening minutes of the second period, Marshfield began pulling away and moved ahead 12-3. But a steal by senior Jake Hickson was dished to Rollin for a fastbreak score. Hickson then sank a 3-pointer, followed by an offensive board by Rollin to make it a one-basket game. The Pirates scored with a little over a minute before the half, but junior Dylan Wynn made two charity shots to keep Siuslaw within a basket enter halftime, 12-14. However, coming back from the break, the Pirates extended their pressure and got results, going on a 17-6 run for a 31-18 lead by the end of the quarter. Though Siuslaw was able to nearly double its scoring in the second half, it wasn’t enough to overtake Marshfield, which went on to win the opener, 53-31. Last night, Siuslaw was on the road at Brookings-Harbor (after press deadlines). Friday, the Vikings will be at Douglas. Girls tip off at 6 p.m., followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m. Siuslaw’s next home game is Jan. 23 against North Bend. close the gap to within 4 points in the first minute of the quarter. Unfortunately, it would be as close as Mapleton would get. “We struggled to handle their pressure down the stretch and they took advantage of our turnovers,” said Wolgamott. The Warriors took the win at home, 55-38. Senior post Dominic Wells, who also played point guard late in the game, led scoring for the Sailors with 16 points. “He played great defense all night and handled their pressure well,” said Wolgamott. Freshman JJ Neece had 9 points for Mapleton. Two nights later, the Sailors were in the Eagles’ nest at Eddyville. “We knew Eddyville was a dangerous team from the outside, so we had to approach them dif- ferently,” Wolgamott said of Mapleton’s strategy. “If we gave them open shots, they’s make us pay for it.” Mapleton’s plan was to switch up its defense and play a physical game in hopes of eliminating the Eagles’ air attack from beyond the arc. Wolgamott started Wells at point guard to keep Eddyville off balance. “Not many teams in this league can move their 6’7” post player to point guard and have him thrive in that position, but Dominic is capable of doing that,” Wolgamott said. The move was able to keep the Eagles’ top scorer in check for most of the first half while junior Evan Moso and senior Tanner Wilson shored up Mapleton’s defensive effort inside the paint. Mapleton traded leads with Eddyville throughout the first half. However, the Sailors struggled in foul shooting, missing 22 attempts in what became a 12- point loss, 41-29. “We lost momentum in the fourth period and allowed them easy 3-pointers,” said Wolgamott. “Our motto is ‘four quarters strong’ and we didn’t quite make that at Eddyville. “That loss stung a little because it was within our grasp.” JJ Neece and Nate Neece led scoring with 6 points apiece. “One thing we have in our favor is that our team doesn’t shy away from a challenge,” said Wolgamott, whose team will be at Mohawk tomorrow night. “Hopefully, we can use last week as a learning tool in the weeks ahead.” Girls results from last week’s match-ups were unable at press time. Thursday’s game at Mohawk begins with the girls at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys at 7 p.m. Mapleton’s next home game is Thursday, Jan. 25, against McKenzie, with the girls tipping off at 5:30 p.m. Get Results...List With Melody.
