SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, JANUARY 13, 2018 FEC calls artists to show their Love of Animals Florence Elks Lodge to host annual Hoop Shoot Boys and girls from Florence, Mapleton and Reedsport who are between the ages of 8 to 13 years old, are invited to participate in the annual Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot on Saturday, Jan. 20. The hoop shoot will take place at the Siuslaw Elementary School gymnasi- um from 9 a.m. to noon All athletes wishing to par- ticipate will be shooting 10 free throws to qualify for the final shoot-off of 15 additional free throws. The top boy and girl finish- ers from each division will qualify for the district wide shoot out in Seaside, Ore., on Feb. 4. Athletes who make the finals will advance to the The Friends of the Florence Events Center is putting out a call to local artists so they may share their love of animals for a special February/March Exhibit at the Florence Events Center (FEC). The Friends are celebrating all animals - domestic, wildlife, marine, birds and any other animal that strikes that artists pet fancy. The exhibit is open to all artistic mediums - pho- tography, painting, fiber, multi- media, pastel, or 3-D art. Rods for up to 3 pieces of artwork can be purchased for only $20 for the entire rod. Items relating to this theme are also welcome for the display case, with up to three items being displayed for $20. Artists are asked to bring their artwork to the FEC’s Gallery One on Tuesday, Jan 30 between 9 and 10:30 p.m. An Artist Reception will be held for the community on Saturday, Feb. 10 from 10 a.m. statewide competition in Milwaukee, Ore. on Feb. 11. If they win their division (8- and 9-year-olds, 10- and 11- year-olds and 12- and 13-year- olds), they will then compete in the Pacific Northwest tour- nament in Portland, Ore., March 11. If successful at this level, The Florence Elks Lodge will send them and a parent to the National Shoot Out on April 22, in Chicago, Ill. Parents, friends, family are welcome to attend the compe- tition. Those eligible are required to be 8 years old on or before April 01, 2018 and cannot become 14 on or before April 1, 2018. Free Native Plants Available MAPLETON—Those who live near a river, creek or lake can receive free native plants from the Siuslaw Watershed Council’s annual Native Plant Distribution program. Trees and shrubs planted along streams help reduce ero- sion, filter nutrients, and keep the water cool for salmon and trout. The distribution is 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb.10. In addition to themed refreshments, the event will be offering families the opportuni- ty to bring their pet in for a framed pet photo. All pets are welcome, either held by a fam- ily member, or on a leash. The photos are $5. The performance will begin at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 17, in the Bromley Room at the main library in Florence, 1460 Ninth St. Not only will the quartet play its unique blend of music, but members will also discuss the history of the genres they have fused into their unique pleasing style. This program is for music lovers of all ages, and is made possible through the support of SEAcoast Entertainment Association. Quattrosound has been together for seven years and is made up of four creative musi- cians, all professionally trained. The group was nominated for Best New Artist at the 2013 Latin Grammy Awards.
