Already at the age of 15, Knipe saw herself as a serious artist. “My art was more than a hobby; it was an integral part of who I was,” Knipe said. “As it is for many students, it was my favorite class.” She pursued oil painting at Mount San Antonio Junior College, California State University Long Beach and COURTESY PHOTO University of Oregon. WLCF deadline for 2018 grant applications is Monday Western Lane Community Foundation (WLCF) wishes to remind all local non-profits that the deadline for submitting a grant application is Monday, Jan 15. Each year, WLCF awards several grants to local non- profit organizations for proj- ects/programs in its target area of western Lane County from Deadwood/Mapleton to Dunes City. Grants are awarded in the areas of education, medicine and science, the arts and social and civic services. In 2017, over $72,000.00 was awarded to 22 of these causes. The annual amount to be awarded is determined by the performance of the invested portfolio of discretionary funds during the current year. The application may be downloaded at WLCF’s web- site at wlcfonline.org and it is highly recommended that applicants review the Grant Guidelines included there. Applications can be submit- ted to Western Lane Community Foundation, P.O. Box 1589 Florence, OR 97439 or to its website. Applications will be reviewed by the Board of Directors and each applicant will be contacted by a board member for an interview regarding the request for funds. Grants will be approved in February and then awarded in late March. Selected grant recipients will be required to submit a grant activity report by Friday, Aug. 31, 2018. Grant requests and awards will be selected based on merit, need, and benefit to the com- munity at large. Grant amounts vary greatly but usually are between $500.00 and $10,000.00. The key spokesperson for the video is Dr. Wilder, Director of Neurointervention at RiverBend. In the video, Dr. Wider discusses the warning signs of a stroke and the need for rapid intervention by utiliz- ing the FAST system: Face — Ask the person to smile and note if the face is uneven. Arms—Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift down or is it unable to move? Speech—Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Does their speech sound strange? Strange speech could mean slurred, the wrong words are used, or the person is unable to speak at all. Time: Time to call 911. Paramedics, when they arrive on scene, will conduct the National Institutes of Health(NIH) Stroke Scale, which is a systematic assess- ment tool that provides a quan- titative measure of stroke neu- rological deficits. The NIH Stroke scale exam- ines 15 items, such as such as language ability, level of con- sciousness, vision acuity, motor strength, ataxia and sen- sory loss. EMS Personnel also utilize the Cincinnati Stroke Triage Assessment Tool (C-STAT), which involves conjugate gaze deviation, arm weakness and level of consciousness. Based on the above assess- ment criteria, paramedics will then make a decision to acti- vate the Regional Stroke Center and facilitate patient transport to that hospital, either by ground or medical helicopter. Time is brain tissue, and the sooner the stroke patient arrives at the Stroke Center; the better the potential out- come towards recovery. Paramedics from WLAD and nurses from PeaceHealth will be available to discuss the exam, assessment and treat- ment options for potential stroke patients and their loved ones; or any member of the general public who may be interested in this filed of emer- gency medicine. Any organization or agency interested in the video presen- tation, followed by a short dis- cussion by paramedics and nurses, is encouraged to con- tact Western Lane Ambulance District at 541-997-9614.
