SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, JANUARY 6, 2018 Florence Garden Club readies for springtime Public invited to film, panel discussion on plastics pollution With new restrictions placed on the recycling of plastics, the topic has raised awareness as well as concerns about the future impact and possible consequences. With that in mind, the Siuslaw News and KCST/KCFM Coast Radio is inviting the com- munity to a free screening of “A Plastic Ocean” on Wednesday, Jan. 10, at City Lights Cinemas. There will be two showings, at 12:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. A Plastic Ocean is an adventure documentary shot on more than 20 locations over the past four years. It features explorers Craig Leeson and Tanya Streeter along with a team of internation- al scientists who reveal the causes and conse- quences of plastic pollution, as well as share solutions. Tickets are free, but there are only 230 avail- able on a first come, first served basis. There is a limit of two per person, available at the Siuslaw News, 148 Maple St. in Old Town, and City Lights Cinemas, 1920 Highway 101. There will be a short Q&A panel for commu- nity members after each showing. This community event is sponsored by Central Coast Disposal, the City of Florence, County Transfer & Recycling and Lane County Waste Management. FUUF to explore ‘The Original Lie’ COURTESY PHOTO Laurel Bay Garden’s Dan Garbe to speak at the Florence Garden Club on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at 1 p.m. With winter kicking into high gear, Florence Garden Club invites the public to start dreaming of warmer days and start planting a garden. The club will be featuring Laurel Bay Garden’s Dan Garbe on Wednesday, Jan. 10 to help attendees with their winter garden bed preparation and propagation questions, as well as touching upon green- house dos and don’ts. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar. Lavanhar grew up as a Unitarian Universalist in Illinois. He majored in sociolo- gy at Tulane and graduated from Harvard Divinity School. All Souls Unitarian Church called him in 2000, making him, at age 32, the youngest senior minister of a major con- gregation in the denomination. He has overseen exponential and experience the joy and simplicity of pre-denominational New Testament Worship.
