Tonight, Jan. 3, learn how to catch a trophy steelhead from local guide Ryan Hatfield of Grey Ghost Guide Service. Hatfield spends spring and summers guiding in Alaska, but in the fall he fishes for salmon on the Siuslaw, and for steelhead in the winter. He will share the tech- niques he uses to help fisher- men catch steelhead in the Siuslaw and on Lake Creek. Hatfield will demonstrate the equipment he uses and share the favorite places he likes to fish The Florence STEP meet- ings are held in the back room of the Florence Elks club, beginning at 7 p.m., and the public is welcome. FISHING REPORT FOR THE LOCAL REGION www.dfw.state.or.us/RR WINTER TROUT FISH- ING Don’t let your trout fish- ing season end just because the cold weather has arrived. Here are just some of the weekend opportuni- ties from this week’s Rec Report: • Several ponds and lakes in the Willamette Zone just took delivery of large brood trout. • In the Southeast Zone, the Ana River has been kicking out trout in the 12- to 16-inch range. The Blitzen also has great year- round fishing. • Expo and Reinhart ponds in the Southwest Zone were recently stocked with legal and larger trout last week. • The Central Zone has several popular winter trout fisheries including the Deschutes, Fall and Metolius rivers. Tied at 26-26 entering halftime, Siuslaw fell behind 26-34 in th opening minutes of the third quarter, then held the Cardinals to just one basket during the last 4 minutes of the period. Meanwhile, sophomore Mia Collins, along with freshmen Gracie Freudenthal and Brea Blankenship, contributed 7 points, pulling the Lady C ORBETT Viks to within 3 points entering the fourth quarter, 33-36. AT A pair of steals and long 3-pointers gave Corbett a 14-8 lead with 29 sec- onds in the period, but senior Jake Hickson drained his own 3-pointer to end the quarter and put the Viks back within 3 points, 11-14, to start the sec- ond period. Siuslaw’s offense switched gears, The Vikings found themselves in a tug of war during Friday’s non-league home stand against Corbett (3-5). Though Siuslaw won the tipoff and scored the first point on a charity shot from senior Jared Brandt, the Cardinals countered at the opposite end of the hardwood — setting a tone that would last for the next 30 minutes of playing time. Sailor teams fall to Yoncalla at home B Y N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw News Friday night, Mapleton hosted Yoncalla for a nonleague match-up that began with the girls’ game, which proved to be a low-scoring affair that culminated in a total of 40 points. The Lady Eagles, from the Skyline League, were eventually able to nudge the Lady Sailors for the win from the freethrow line, 22-18. The boys’ game followed, with the high-pressure Eagles defense able to build a quick lead toward a 69-40 win. The losses puts the Mapleton girls at 0-8 overall and 0-2 in the Mountain West; the boys are 1-7 overall and 1-1 in league play heading into the heart of the MWL season at Alsea tomorrow night.
