Tribes seeks submissions for ‘Charitable Giving’ The Three Rivers Foundation, the giving arm of the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians, has begun its next grant cycle. “The Three Rivers Foundation is an exciting opportunity for us to invest in our local communities,” said Mark Ingersoll, Tribal Council Chairman of the Confederated Tribes. “We are pleased to have the resources available to pro- vide a new opportunity for nonprofit organizations that meet our criteria for additional support for their important work.” The Foundation, established in October 2011 and funded by proceeds from the Three Rivers Casino Resort in Florence, is interested in supporting inno- vative ideas, collaborative approaches and grassroots efforts in the following areas: education, health, public safety, problem gambling, the arts, the environment, cultural activities and historic preservation. Interested parties are invited to review grant criteria and access an electronic application at www.threeriversfoundation .org. Grant applications for this giving cycle will be accepted from through 5 p.m. on Dec. 31. Nonprofit organizations with 501(c) (3) designations and government organizations located in Coos, Curry, Douglas, Lane or Lincoln Counties are encouraged to apply. Additionally, applica- tions from other Oregon non- profit organizations with proj- ects specifically important to Native American populations, projects that have “statewide impact” in Oregon, or other federally recognized tribes are also welcomed. O n Wednesday, Nov. 29, during a taping of the December edition of KCST Radio’s “Our Town” two graduates of the Florence Air Academy (FAA), Liz Ocon and Elijah LaCosse, presented awards of appreciation to Terry Tomeny and Sam Spayd. The two former Air Force colonels conceived, created and taught the two-week course to 13 Boys and Girls Club of Western Lane County (BGCWLC) members this past summer. FAA was held at the Florence Airport and included lesson in navigation, flight planning, meteorology, air traf- fic control and flight dynamics. At the conclusion of the course, all 13 participants got to fly a plane, with the aid of a licensed pilot. BGCWLC Executive Director Jack Davis said, “The FAA program that Sam and Terry presented exemplifies one of the core missions of the Boys and Girls Club, to inspire our kids to grow and achieve their full potential. “Programs like FAA moti- vates our members to visualize and work toward achieving their vocational life goals.” 240 HOURS Is your family prepared? Soroptimist to distribute food baskets and toys Soroptimist International of Florence has kicked off its annual Christmas Basket col- lection season to bring food baskets and toys to the commu- nity. Donations of new, unwrapped toys are still being excepted at collection points throughout city. Drop off points include: Oregon Pacific Bank; First Community Credit Union; Banner Bank; U.S. Bank; Washington-Federal Savings; Lane Community College; AIC Insurance; Coastal Fitness; Hoberg Muffler; On Your Feet; Rite Aid; St. Mary’s Catholic Church; The Shipping Shack; Three Rivers Casino and Resort; Stone Haven Acupuncture; Fred Meyer; West Coast Auto Body; Shervin’s Tire; Florence Eye Clinic; State Farm Insurance; and Able Insurance. The food baskets and toys will be distributed Saturday, Dec. 16. The food baskets will be distributed at Siuslaw Middle School at 2525 Oak St., between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Those picking up food bas- kets must line up on 27th Street between Kingwood and Oak Street. The baskets will be handed out on a first come, first serve basis. Toys will also be distributed between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Church of the Nazarene. Toys are only for children ages infant to 12 years, and children will not be allowed in the distribution area.
