The ocean commercial Dungeness crab season in Oregon is targeted to open Dec. 1, but can be delayed to ensure a high-quality product to con- sumers and to avoid wastage of the resource. Crab quality testing in late Testing will continue to determine if the season should open Dec. 31 or be further delayed. November and early December showed that half of the areas still did not meet the criteria for an opening. The delayed opening will allow for crabs to fill with more meat. Testing will continue to determine if the season should open Dec. 31, be fur- ther delayed, or be split into two areas with different opening dates. In con- junction with the delayed ocean com- mercial season, commercial harvest of Dungeness crab in Oregon bays is now closed for the remainder of the year. Trout stocking is com- plete for the year. Cape Meares, Town, Coffenbury, Lost and Sunset lakes were stocked with “trophy” rain- bow trout in late September. Cedar Creek Hatchery has stocked over 160 sur- plus summer steelhead in Town Lake near Pacific City so far this fall. These fish get fairly active in the lake and offer a unique fishing experi- ence. Once in the lake they are considered “trout” and do not require a Combined Angling Tag. Anglers are reminded, however, that only one trout per day over 20-inch- es may be retained, and these fish will all be in that size range. B Y N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw News Siuslaw’s boys basketball home opener Tuesday night provided Viking fans with another nailbiter that pushed the final outcome into the final sec- onds in overtime. C UBS The biggest lead in the game was 5 points, held briefly by both Siuslaw (20-15) in the second period and then by Newport late in the third period (42-37.) But throughout the first half and into the third quarter, it was a game of trad- ing baskets as the Vikings and Cubs battled it out on the hardwood. The game was tied three times in the open- ing period, with the Vikings holding a slim 13-12 lead heading into the sec- ond period on a last-second dish from senior point guard Jared Brandt to fel- IN OT low senior post Trent Reavis. A long 3-pointer from end end of the baseline by Newport gave the Cubs a 29-26 lead at halftime. With Siuslaw holding a 2-3 zone defensively for the majority of the game, Newport made the most of its ability to shoot from the perimeter, scoring 57 of its eventual 69 points from beyond the arc. The Vikings, meanwhile, utilized speed and solid passing to penetrate the Cubs’ full-court press. See VIKS 3B Olalla Reservoir has been stocked with about 100 surplus summer steel- head this season. At the post, sophomore Mia Collins was solid inside, nabbing 7 rebounds and scoring 7 points, along with a pair of blocked shots. Freshmen Lindsey Long and Brea Blankenship combined for 11 points — 6 from Long and 5 from Blankenship — and junior guard Madison Reynolds sank 2 points against Newport. Off the glass, Blankenship and Carreina Greenburg had 7 boards apiece, along with 6 from Marika White, 5 from Alyssa Richards and 4 from Reynolds. The loss put the Lady Viks at 0-3 heading into the final day of the three- day Les Schwab Eagle Boosters tour- nament, which kicked off Thursday at Harrisburg and continues today at Junction City against Colton. Tuesday night, Marshfield and South Umpqua had the only Far West League wins, with the Pirates beating Cottage Grove 46-29, and the Lancers handling North Valley 44-21.
