SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2017 Soroptimist to distribute food baskets and toys Soroptimist International of Florence has kicked off its annual Christmas Basket col- lection season to bring food baskets and toys to the com- munity. Donations of new, unwrapped toys are still being excepted at collection points throughout city. Drop off points include: Oregon Pacific Bank; First Community Credit Union; Banner Bank; US Bank; WA Federal Savings; Lane Community College; AIC Insurance; Coastal Fitness; Hoberg Muffler; On Your Feet; Rite Aid; St. Mary’s Catholic Church; The Shipping Shack; Three Rivers Casino and Resort; Stone Haven Acupuncture; Fred Meyer; West Coast Auto B o d y ; S h e r v i n ’s Ti r e ; Florence Eye Clinic; State Farm Insurance; and Able Insurance. The food baskets and toys will be distributed Saturday, Dec. 16. The food baskets will be distributed at Siuslaw Middle School at 2525 Oak St., between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Those picking up food bas- kets must line up on 27th Street between Kingwood and Oak Street. The baskets will be handed out on a first come, first serve basis. Toys will also be distrib- uted between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Church of the Nazarene. Toys are only for children ages infant to 12 years, and children will not be allowed in the distribution area. The three-day extravaganza takes place at the Florence Events Center on Jan. 12-14 and showcases a variety of international touring talent and world class artisans, along with a wealth of locally sourced cui- sine and fine libations. On Saturday evening, Jan. 13, at “The Main Event,” the legendary Brit folk rocker Al Stewart performs his multi- platinum “Year of The Cat” hits, along with Oregon’s favorite young storytelling troubadour, John Craigie. The highly anticipated “Friday Night Throwdown” pairs the Appalachian blue- grass stylings of Grammy win- ning icon Laurie Lewis and her band alongside the blistering Americana banjo and man- dolin virtuosity of Jeff Scroggins & Colorado. The afternoon will end with the rockin’ western swing of rising Canadian favorites, Petunia & The Vipers. The Gospel Gumbo Gathering scheduled for Sunday afternoon, Jan. 14, presents some of the central coast’s finest choir members performing traditional and contemporary selections. Rhianna Haines, the cho- rus’s accompanist, will be playing a medley of “Angels We Have Heard on High” and “Deck the Halls,” arranged by Roger Williams. Because she was unable to locate sheet music, she learned the entire score by ear. The concert is free. However, contributions will be appreciated.
