SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2017 SHIBA warns of scam Medicare phone calls Oregon’s Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance program (SHIBA) is warning individuals to be wary of “cold calls” being made in their name. SHIBA staff members and volunteers help consumers understand and enroll in Medicare, but they never make unsolicited phone calls. Anyone who did not contact SHIBA first should refuse to share any personal information and hang up on any unexpect- ed caller claiming to be from SHIBA. Rejecting this type of “cold calls” is a smart habit to avoid scams. Oregon SHIBA has received one report of a simi- lar suspicious call being made here. “We help people over the phone all the time," said Lisa Emerson, Oregon SHIBA pro- gram manager, “but only when they call us, or when we're returning their call.” SHIBA has a statewide net- work of trained volunteers who educate and advocate for people of all ages who have or want to enroll in Medicare. These volunteers, plus five state employees, help con- sumers understand their rights and Medicare insurance choic- es. To find a SHIBA counselor in your area, contact SHIBA at 1-800-722-4134. Remembrance during Hospice, Palliative Care Month November is National Hospice and Palliative Care month. PeaceHealth Peace Harbor Medical Center Hospice — your community hospice team — serves an area of 25 square miles surrounding the city of Florence, including Westlake, Mapleton, Deadwood and Swisshome. Hundreds of families in our community have benefited this year from the services our non- profit hospice provides. “It is an honor to be invited into the homes of our commu- nity neighbors and to help them through what is a very difficult time as they face the challenges of life threatening illnesses,” said Nancy Allen, one of the home health aides. Peace Harbor Hospice pro- vides care to individuals who have a prognosis of six months or less by focusing on the phys- ical, emotional and spiritual needs of the families and their loved ones. Hospice offers nurses, thera- pists, social workers, aides, volunteers and chaplain servic- es, all under the direction of the hospice and palliative care board-certified physician. Peace Harbor Hospice is sponsoring its 22nd annual Light Up A Life fundraiser cer- emony on Sunday, Dec. 9, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Florence Events Center. The ceremony presents a wonderful opportunity to honor and cher- ish the memories of your loved ones. Stars can be purchased to recognize a loved one who has died or to recognize someone special in your life. The stars, each with the loved one’s name attached, are hung on a holiday tree; Stars of David are placed on a Menorah table. Recognition is also given during the “reading of the names” segment of the ceremo- ny. Peace Harbor Hospice is a non-profit 501(c) organization; all contributions are tax deductible. One hundred per- cent of the donations to Light Up A Life benefit Peace Harbor Hospice and the Florence-area patients and families we serve. Donations can be mailed to Peace Harbor Hospice, 400 Ninth St., Florence, or can be dropped off at thr office at 2230 Kingwood St. To learn more or contribute, call 541-997-3418.
