People are encouraged to “ride the wave” to Florence Big Wave Poetry’s monthly Students make ‘Empty Bowls’ sponsored event with their favorite poems, stories, songs and prose. As Dec. 1, 2 and 3 nears, Lane Community College (LCC) Florence Center ceramics students and Siuslaw High School (SHS) art students are busy creating bowls for Florence Food Share’s Empty Bowls fundraiser being held at the Florence Events Center. While the clay is being formed, glazes applied and the kilns fired up, students are spending time in the classroom preparing for this annual event while learning and improving on their craft. LCC members have supported Florence Food Share through the Empty Bowls fundraiser for every one of its 22 years. Through student contributions of time, expertise and artistry, Florence Food Share has been able to serve the less fortunate in the area through funds raised at this com- munity event. More than 70 SHS students are also involved in the production of handmade ceramic bowls for Empty Bowls. Students not only learn how to create handcrafted ceramic bowls, they are also learning how to give back to their community in a unique way. The project has helped raise awareness of the needs of others and how to assist in meeting those needs. This is a community effort, with neigh- bors, families and residents of all ages attending the event and choosing a special bowl. Each bowl sold contains a soup coupon redeemable for one cup of the “soup of the day” at participating restaurants through the month of December. Food Share expects to have more than 700 bowls available to the public for pur- chase, with most bowls priced at $10 each. Empty Bowls 2017 will be at Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St., on Friday, Dec. 1, from 5 to 7 p.m., and continues Saturday, Dec. 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, Dec 3, from noon to 3 p.m. Admission to the event is free. Sam Spayd (USAF Col. Ret.) has agree to serve as the Red Kettle Campaign Coordinator. He will have the support of former coordinator Janet Snow and her “army” of volunteers. However, more volunteers are needed to stand at the kettles’ this year. In the past two years, Florence area kettles have far exceeded the national aver- ages for donations and sup- port. Locations are at local grocery and retail stores, as well as a “floating” kettle kept in Old Town Florence that is available for visits to local churches and organizations to use need volunteers. Anyone can help, but they need some training.
