SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2017 Unitarians to honor ‘Day of the Dead’ Sunday All are welcome to join the Florence Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on Sunday, Oct. 29, from 10 to 11 a.m. to celebrate the sacred Day of the Dead. Nin Bebeau will lead this simple cele- bration titled: “The Thin Veil.” “There is a special energy about this time of the year. According to myth, the veil between the world of the living and that of the dead is thinnest,” Bebeau said. “At this time, many cultures com- mune with loved ones who have passed beyond the veil. In Mexico, to honor the dead, people bring food and instruments to the cemetery for a night of singing and music to celebrate lost loves.” Those who attend the service are encouraged to bring pictures and objects to honor those who have passed over. The fellowship is located at 87738 Highway 101 at Heceta Beach Road and is wheelchair accessible. Each service concludes with refresh- ments and a dialogue circle to explore the questions that come up during each service. For more information, visit www.flo- renceuuf.org. Soroptomist to speak at Florence Area Community Coalition After an exciting Halloween night of trick-or-treating, come to the Florence Area Community Coalition (FACC) on Wednesday, Nov. 1, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in the Bromley Room of the Siuslaw Public Library, 1460 Ninth St. The speaker for this month is Carol Bennett, representing the Soroptimist International of Florence. Bennett will discuss the club’s annual Christmas service project. For the past 35 years, the Soroptimists have raised funds to provide food boxes and gifts to people in our community. This year, their monetary goal is $20,000, which will become 450 food boxes to be given out on Dec. 16. Bennett will also tell about the collection of toys and gifts for children infants to 12 years old. There will be a question and answer period after her presen- tation, where attendees can learn more about the Soroptimists, both locally and globally, and their service and humanitarian projects. City Club to feature Siuslaw Education Foundation On Friday, Nov. 3, the City Club of Florence will host a presentation of the Siuslaw Education Foundation (SEF) by Ethel Angal, retired Superintendent of Siuslaw School District and current SEF Board Member. Originally the SEF started in the 1980’s, with the Property Tax Limitation measure and loss of timber funds, which impacted school districts state wide. Ashland was the first I-5 corridor district to create a pri- vate, nonprofit charitable foun- dation. In April 2017, SEF received a 501(c)3 tax status, with the purpose to raise money for Siuslaw and Mapelton school districts. The City Club meets from noon to 1 p.m. in the club house of the Ocean Dunes Golf Links, 3345 Munsel Lake Rd. A limited lunch menu is available for purchase prior to the program. Meetings are open to the public.
