8 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2017 Siuslaw Broadband starts Hyak Fiber pilot project St. Mary’s Women’s Guild to host Fall Bazaar On Oct. 16, Siuslaw Broadband, a Florence-based ISP and technology company, hit two key milestones: Florence City Council approved the sale of Lot 23 in the Pacific View Business Park and Siuslaw Broadband broke ground on its fiber pilot proj- ect, named Hyak. “The Pacific View Business Park lot will give a home to our fiber hut, which is just a fancy word for a concrete shed,” said Robbie Wright, founder and CEO of Siuslaw Broadband. “It will house our headend equip- ment and be the location where all of the installed fiber comes back to. The lot also gives us great flexibility in our future building use. “While we have no immedi- ate plans to build a large build- ing, the lot gives us the ability to create a yard for storage of our conduit, park vehicles, etc.” Neil Ecker, COO of Siuslaw Broadband, said, “Fiber is the future of communication and high speed internet. The Hyak Fiber Project is installing industry-leading gigabit and 10 gigabit service to the pilot proj- ect area and will have one of the cheapest gigabit internet options in the nation at $49.99/month.” The Hyak project will have both active ethernet (AE) and GPON (gigabit passive optical network). “We are taking a dedicated fiber to each residence and business and wiring the project as if we were doing AE. Most residential networks use GPON to save on numerous different expenses,” Ecker said. “We chose to wire the city for AE to give us greater flexibility in service delivery.” As anyone in Florence knows, the weather can play a role in any type of outdoor project. On Saturday, Nov. 4, the St. Mary’s Women's Guild will host its annual Fall Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a gift basket raffle and cash-prize raffles totaling $800. In addition to handmade gift baskets, there will be a sweet shoppe, handcrafted items, plants, games, toys, books, puzzles and Fair Trade items. Mexican food from local restaurants will be available, along with pie by the slice and free coffee. St. Mary’s Catholic Church is located south of the Siuslaw River Bridge, 85060 Highway 101 S. The pilot area (right) encompasses Pacific View Business Park and residential areas. Siuslaw Broadband will be working through the coming weeks to complete the road construction portion of the project. The project mainly encom- passes the Pacific View Business Park on Kingwood, the residential areas on 15th Street east to the Boys and Girls Club, and west of the airport into Park Village. Siuslaw Broadband expects to be bringing customers live on the new network in the first weeks of December. “Our office on Highway 101 meets our needs today, but I can pretty easily see a new warehouse and office complex needed in the future at our new lot,” said Wright. The board of directors of Last Resort Players, a local nonprofit theater group that performs at the Florence Events Center, has extended the competition to create a new logo to replace LRP’s cur- rent logo. The new logo will be on LRP letter heads, its website and social media, t-shirts and membership cards. Submissions must be received no later than Nov. 2, and more than one design can be submitted by artists. The design can be in black and white or color. Submissions can be mailed to Last Resort Players, P.O. Box 2104, Florence, Ore. 97439, or emailed to LRP sec- retary Judy Adams at lastresort players2@gmail.com. The LRP members will choose the new logo and a final decision will be made at the next board meeting Nov. 9. The winner will receive $200 and the distinction of having their logo mass pro- duced and displayed in many formats. For ideas, visit the LRP website at www.lastresort players.org.
