6 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2017 Figure 8, a local group of artists who paint or draw people from life, is showing portraits at the Siuslaw Public Library, 1460 Ninth St. in Florence, during the month of October. Figure 8 has been meeting together twice a month for more than 12 years. The group began meeting at the old Jan Kunz Studio, and since then has met at various locations, including the old Market Place Restaurant, and churches. Figure 8 is currently meeting at Cross Roads Church, across from the Siuslaw Public Library. The membership has changed over the years, but the group con- tinues. Operating with a coordi- nator, but no instructor, the model is posed in one position for 20 minutes at a time before taking a five-minute break, then returns to the same position. Models are often members of the Florence community, but some- times are just an interesting stranger who happened to pass through. Recorded instrumental music usually plays in the background while the group is in the process of creating, but occasionally music is provided by the model, using guitar or keyboard. While there is an established membership of 8 people, there is also a list of guest artists who will be called if one of the regu- lar members can’t make it. Jan Woodford coordinates the group, assisted by Virginia Korosec and Karen Baylis, who takes over if she cannot attend. Other members whose work is being displayed this year are Jeanette Frasca, Timothy Creager, Jan Landrum, Lola Simpson and Nancy Walker. Guest artists included Karen Nichols and Patricia Ball. This year’s show at the library, “A Retrospective,” includes dis- plays of works by past members. The late Katheryn Davis, Bob Kutch and Gunner Nelson were longtime members of Figure 8. Mary Kellis, also a longtime member, is now retired and liv- ing in her home in Florentine Estates.
