SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2017 News about the Siuslaw Public Library Library Tidings, a regular feature of the Siuslaw News, features news about upcoming Siuslaw Public Library pro- grams for adults and children, new books and videos, and other library news of interest to the community. Library Tidings by Kevin Mittge Book Review “The Shadow Land” By Elizabeth Kostova From the critically acclaimed author of “The Historian,” comes a novel that blends the past and the present even more powerfully. “The Shadow Land,” by Elizabeth Kostova, is a mesmer- izing story that spans genera- tions and unearths the troubled history of a gorgeous but haunt- ed country. A young American woman, Alexandra Boyd, has traveled to Sofia, Bulgaria, hoping that life abroad will salve the wounds left by the loss of her beloved broth- er. Soon after arriving in this ele- gant East European city, howev- er, she helps an elderly couple into a taxi — and realizes too late that she has accidentally kept one of their bags, engraved with the name: Stoyan Lazarov. Raising the hinged lid, she discovers that she is holding an urn filled with human ashes. As Alexandra sets out to locate the family and return this precious item, she will first have to uncover the secrets of a talented musician who was shattered by political oppression — and she will find out all too quickly that this knowledge is fraught with its own danger. Kostova’s new novel is a tale of immense scope that delves into the horrors of a century and traverses the culture and land- scape of this mysterious country. Suspenseful and beautifully written, it explores the power of stories, the pull of the past and the hope and meaning that can sometimes be found in the after- math of loss. John Daniel to keynote Florence Festival of Books Oregon author John Daniel, who has just this year published the novel “Gifted,” will be the keynote speaker at this year's Florence Festival of Books on Friday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m., at the Florence Events Center. Daniel has received the Oregon Book Award for two prior books, “The Far Corner: Northwestern Views on Land, Life, and Literature” and “Looking After: A Son’s Memoir.” “Gifted” tells the story of a young man with a spiritual imag- ination and a rare affinity for wild creatures who comes of age under harsh circumstances, negotiating the wildness of his home country, his human rela- tionships and the emerging com- plexities of his own being. The Florence Festival of Books is an opportunity to meet authors and pick up some great books. For more information about the Florence Festival of Books, including a list of all the partici- pating authors, and to purchase tickets to the keynote address, visit the festival website at www .florencefestivalofbooks.org.
