B SIUSLAW NEWS FILE PHOTOS Boy Scout of America Troop 721 hosts its sixth annual Pinewood Derby in Historic Old Town Florence on Saturday, Sept. 8, during Rods ’n’ Rhodies. Registration is from 10 to 11 a.m., with the fi rst race at 11:30 a.m. Th e sponsor race will be at 1 p.m. Pinewood Derby, a racing event for the Boy Scouts of America, began in 1953 when the creator’s son was too young to participate in the traditional and popular soap box derby races of that time. Th e miniature version was based on the same concept as the full sized version: a parent helping their child construct a vehicle under certain criteria, competing on a track where gravity provided the power. In 1954, Boy Scouts of America fully endorsed the program by publicizing the event in Boys Life magazine, off ering plans for both car and track. Each person builds a vehicle from a block of pine wood (hence the name), four wheels and four nails for axles. Creativity and innovation can be applied in an attempt to decrease the drag and increase the speed of the car, just as done in big kids’ race cars. Pinewood Derby has been recognized by Hollywood in movies titled “Pine- wood Derby” and “Down and Derby,” and even on a “South Park” television episode. But you don’t need to go to the movies to see the real deal — just wander down to the corner of Bay and Nopal streets in historic Old Town Florence and catch the action on the track.
