These fish get fairly active in the lake and offer a unique fishing experience. Once in the lake they are considered “trout” and do not require a Combined Angling Tag. Anglers are reminded, however, that only one trout per day over 20 inches may be retained, and these fish will almost all be in that size range. Mid Coast lakes have been stocked with trout throughout the spring. Trout stocking is over until the fall but there still should be fish around to catch. Water temps are great and fish should be hungry, so go catch them. 5:47am / -0.2 5:51pm/ 1.9 6:23am/ -0.3 6:30pm/ 1.4 S IUSLAW N EWS 148 Maple St. Florence 541-997-3441 SALMON RIVER: embers of Siuslaw High School’s football and cheerleading teams took to Hans Petersen Field on Friday night, providing fans with a preview of this year’s squad members, cheerleading routines and football plays during the annual Blue and Gold Night. Athletes in lesser known sports with smaller teams, however, have the unique advantage of advancing to varsity immediately — given that there are hardly enough kids to make one full team, much less a second one. This is especially the case in bowling, where many teams are carried by one or two senior students who have been bowling all their lives. In the realm of the sport, seeing a freshman teams with nothing to their names is gen- erally met with scoffs and laughter, and they definitely aren’t seen as any competi- tion. The sounds of countless strikes in the alley quiets those sentiments. For the Siuslaw High Chinook, trout Fall Chinook season is open and fishing is starting to pick up in the estuary. Trout season is open and there should be some nice cutthroat around. Remember the limit on streams and rivers is two per day over 8 inches. Siuslaw High School bowling teams practice and compete at Holiday Bowl in Florence. HANNA ANDERSON/FOR SIUSLAW NEWS School boys team, the reputa- tion of “the freshman bowl- ing team” isn’t easy to shake off, even after three full years of bowling. This last year, the team placed third in the entire state, and that is with- out the one senior carrying it See BOWLING 3B Steelhead, Chinook, trout The Siletz River is open for fall Chinook and fish- ing is starting to pick up in the bay. Spring Chinook and summer steelhead are being caught, and fishing should continue to improve. Recycling hatchery sum- mer steelhead from the Siletz Falls trap has ended for the season. Casting spinners, drifting bait or using a bobber and jig can be effective. There should be some nice cutthroat around.
