I t has been several years since I first wrote about our local U.S. Coast Guard Station Siuslaw River, and it’s time to update that story for a variety of reasons. Today, the City of Florence is being named a “Coast Guard City,” only one of three in Oregon and one of 24 across the nation. It is an honor for our com- munity to be recognized in this way by the United States Coast Guard for the special efforts that we have proven for show- ing the appreciation for our own “Coasties” here in Florence. Today’s honor will be bestowed on our community, by none other than Rear Admiral David Throop, Commander of Coast Guard 13th District. In conjunction with that ceremony, Station Siuslaw River will be holding an open house later today and open its doors for the public to see what they do and meet the crew. U.S. Coast Guard Station Siuslaw River was established Dec. 14, 1917, when Capt. Theodore Roberge from the Coast Guard Station Cape Disappointment was appointed as the “Keeper” of Station Siuslaw River. By March 1918, the Station had a full crew con- sisting of five men from Florence and three men from other local towns. Today, Station Siuslaw River serves as one of seven lifeboat stations in Oregon whose pri- mary mission is to provide search and rescue to commer- cial mariners, recreational boaters and surfers. But that’s not all they do. They also escort fishing ves- sels across the bar; provide marine environmental protec- tion; conduct fisheries conser- vation enforcement; tow dis- tressed vessels; and enforce boating regulations. Celebrating 100 years in Florence this year, the Station has been autonomous since 1917, with the exception of a brief period following Clinton- era budget cuts. The local Station does this with an average compliment of 34 personnel, whose length of duty at this station can range from six-months to two years, depending on rank and service rating. In addition, they are aug- mented by an Auxiliary Detachment, Flotilla 52, filled with volunteers who help with station duties as well as per- form safety inspections on ves- sels. The station is equipped Florence will become a bar- gain hunter’s paradise from Friday, Sept. 8, through Sunday, Sept. 10, during its fifth-annual Community-wide Garage Sale. Dozens of private homes, neighborhoods, gated commu- nities and retail outlets will open their doors to adventurous shoppers. To participate as an official sale site, sellers pay $20 to be included in a map of all partic- ipating locations published and delivered to subscribers of the Siuslaw News in its Wednesday, Sept. 6 edition. Extra copies will be avail- able at the Siuslaw News and on its website, as well as at the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce. Deadline for inclusion in the map and directory is 5 p.m. Aug. 31. Participating sites also receive a 15-word descrip- tion of their offerings, two official Community-wide Garage Sale signs, guidelines on how and where to post them, along with a tip sheet on how to have a successful sale. Fees can be paid in person at the Siuslaw News, 148 Maple St., or by mail at P.O. Some people may have mis- nomers about the U.S. Coast Guard — such as it is not an armed-service like the US Army or USMC. In reality, the motor life boats are armed with fire- power, as well as personnel trained and armed with side- arms and who sometimes par- ticipate in drug enforcement actions; the USCG chopper which we see regularly flying the friendly skies over Florence is based out of North Bend not Florence — although they per- form regular training exercises together. And even though our Coastguard men and women may not serve in harm’s way overseas in some conflict, they serve the waters off our coast to keep us from harm’s way by putting themselves on the line. Be sure to thank our local Coastguard men and women when you see them in our com- munity. The museum just unveiled a new United States Coast Guard display and the community is invited to join us Thursday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to check it out. The current Officer in Charge is Master Chief Tim Tregoning, who just celebrated his advancement in March of this year, at the Oregon Coast Military Heritage Museum. While many of us may only see our USCG neighbors in parades or in practice on the Siuslaw River, they are far more active than that: over the past four years they have con- ducted 153 search and rescue cases with 17 lives saved and 313 lives assisted. A notable search and rescue case was the rescue of the fish- ing vessel Pacific Rose in March, who broke down off of Heceta Head. A 47-foot Motor Lifeboat (MLB) responded and towed the disabled boat through 10- to 12-foot seas and 30kts of wind back to the Siuslaw River bar, where two MLBs worked together to get the fishing vessel and all three of her crew to safety at the Port of Siuslaw. A more recent case included the search and rescue of a dis- abled recreational vessel that drifted over a shoal and quick- ly became extremely in danger as it approached the rocks. A 29-foot Response Boat- Small II (RB-S II) responded and quickly took the disabled vessel into tow and navigated through the narrow channels Community garage sale set for Rods ’N’ Rhodies weekend D EADLINE AUGUST 18 - 24 3 A 12:00 PM 6:30 PM Box Office opens 30 min. prior to 1 st Film | 1930 HWY 101 | www.citylightscinemas.com | Times: 541-305-0014 4515 Hwy. 101 N., Florence 541- 997-5049 AJ and Megan Shervin, Owners
