SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 2, 2017 Genealogy Society to hold Irish, Scotish picnic Fáilte roimh chách (all are welcome) to attend the Wednesday, Aug.16, Siuslaw Genealogy Society picnic as they celebrate Irish/Scottish heritage. The shenanigans will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the Elks Lodge RV Park Recreation Hall on Mercer Lake Road. Join them as they learn a wee bit about Irish/Scottish her- itage. Hamburgers, buns and fun will be provided. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own drinks, a side dish and sense of humor to share. Silverware, plates, cups and napkins will be available thanks to the Master Recyclers of Florence, but attendees should bring appro- priate serving dishes, utensils and containers for leftovers. Bagpiper Tom Shine will start the merriment. He has been a piper for over 40 years. He started learning to play the bagpipes in Washington DC under the guidance of Sandy Jones, Pipe Major of the U.S. Air Force Pipe Band. In 1970 COURTESY PHOTO Rick Lang and Tom Burns in 2014. Tom joined the Washington Scottish Pipe Band. The self-proclaimed “Wandering Piper” has been playing in Oregon since 1979. He has traveled throughout the world bringing bagpipe music to thousands. He hopes to be joined by fellow piper, Rick Lang. Tom will be followed by Scottish/Irish trivia, recollec- tions, swapping of tales and general Craic (fun, enjoyment, abandonment, and light hearted mischief). Prizes will be awarded for trivia champion and the best “tall tale” Irish/Scottish story. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 34.5 million Americans list their heritage as either primarily or partially Irish. That number is, inciden- tally, seven times larger than the population of Ireland itself (4.68 million). Irish is the sec- ond-most common ancestry among Americans, falling just behind German. The census also states that nearly 12 percent of Oregon’s population has Irish ancestry. In Lane County, 23 percent are Irish and in Florence, 18.1 per- cent are Irish. RSVP is requested for the event. Call Pat at 541-991- 0885, or Jacquie at 541-999- 5460 for more information.
