SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, JULY 29, 2017 5 A Pacific Publishing Phone Book Cover contest selects F. Michael Wood Pacific Publishing selected a winning painting for the cover of the 2018 Central Coast Connection phone book. The painting was done by local and nationally acclaimed artist F. Michael (Mike) Wood. Wood’s painting was select- ed from a field of 30 entries from 15 artists. “We were very impressed with the quality and number of entries we received, and sin- cerely thank all the artists for participating,” said Patrick Looney, Pacific Publishing general manager. The local company produces the Florence Business Directory and phone book, titled Central Coast Connection. The book with the winning entry featured on its cover will be mailed in early September to 18,000 households and busi- nesses in Florence, Mapleton, Reedsport and Yachats. Wood’s winning entry was chosen by a panel of three for its local, colorful and playful scene. “Once selected, we were pleased to find out it was sub- mitted by one of Florence’s highly regarded painters,” said Looney. “We are really pleased to add Michael Wood to the list of local artists whose work has been featured on the cover of the book.” The phone book is known for its iconic covers, which have alternately featured a local painting or photo for the past two decades. “I’m an impressionist which, to put it simply, is painting sim- ply,” said Wood. Wood emphasizes emo- tional content and mood, light and shadow in his paintings, while merely suggesting detail in a man- ner which makes it con- vincing to the eye. “Impressionism’s goal is to translate the complex into simple language that will be eagerly and easily read and understood, not by the mind, but by the heart,” he said. To read more about Wood, and view many of his paintings, go to www .fmichaelwood.com. Wood also teaches classes at the Florence Regional Arts Alliance (FRAA) on Wednesday afternoons from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. FRAA, which organ- ized the contest for Pacific Publishing, is located at 120 Maple St. COURTESY PHOTO (From left) Kristin Anderson, FRAA president and contest coordinator; artist F.
