On July 17, the city received notice from Rear Admiral David Throop, who serves as the Commander of the 13th Coast Guard District in Seattle, Wash., that the application was successful. The Coast Guard City Designation is a special one that recognizes the rela- tionship between a local Coast Guard station and the community they are located within. The City of Florence joins 23 other communities across the nation that have also earned this desig- nation as a Coast Guard City. This milestone is especially signifi- cant to have received in 2017 as this year marks the 100-year anniversary that the Florence community has been served by the local US Coast Guard Station Siuslaw River. On Wednesday, Aug. 16, the City of Florence and the U.S. Coast Guard Station Siuslaw River will celebrate Florence’s Coast Guard City designa- tion and the community members who helped make it possible during a reception open to the public. Community members are encour- aged to come hear about how Florence became a Coast Guard City, what this means, and to meet mem- bers of the community who have helped to achieve this community goal. The City will receive the official des- ignation as a Coast Guard City from the U.S. Coast Guard at the celebra- tion. The event will be held at the FEC from 10:30 a.m. to noon, with the for- mal program beginning at 11 a.m. Refreshments will be available. Call to artists Artists sought to particpate in ‘Symbols of America’ exhibit Susan Thomas has donated this American Eagle portrait as a raffle prize for the ‘American Symbols’ theme at the FEC. The Friends of FEC Gallery Committee are pleased to present the theme “Symbols of America” in Galleries One and Five during the month of October. This will be done in conjunction with the Oregon Coast Military Museum, and all proceeds from a raffle will be donated to the museum. The raffle prize is a beautiful American eagle in front of an American flag, an original pastel by artist Susan Thomas. Artists can enter anything represent- ing our beautiful country. Scenery: National Parks, ocean, mountains, desert, waterfalls. Wildlife: eagle, buffalo, bear, mus- tang, sea and river life. Monuments: flags, sports, cultures, space, technology, careers, heroes, and so much more. We welcome all forms of media, including 2-D and 3-D art, and the art of photography. Books and writing Registration deadline for Festival of Books is fast approaching The annual Florence Festival of Books, a book fair for authors, pub- lishers and readers, will take place Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29 and 30. The event is hosted by the Friends of the FEC and the FFOB planning committee. Now in its seventh year, the book festival continues to be a popular gath- ering for authors, publishers and potential future authors, as well as readers eager to find and meet new authors. The public is invited to this free event. The book festival will feature several publishers. Writers are invited to bring their manuscripts for a chance to meet with publishers representing many genres including: fiction, nonfiction, memoir, children’s literature, fantasy, mystery, young adult, poetry and more. Nearly 20 of the authors in atten- dance will be local residents. On Friday, Sept. 29, John Daniel, winner of the 2006 Pacific Northwest Bookseller’s Association Book Award, will be the guest speaker beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance, or $10 at the door. There will also be a meet-and-greet and special author’s panel that evening. Saturday’s book festival will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For authors and publishers wishing to participate with their own booth, t ime is running out. Only a limited number of tables remain, after which names will then be placed on a waiting list. Although the deadline to sign up isn’t until Sept. 1, the FFOB always fills before the deadline — so get your application in ASAP. The fee is $55 for a 6-foot table or $70 for an 8-foot. If two authors want to share an 8-ft table, the fee is $85. The fee is waived for authors of books under 18 years of age who will share tables. Large and small publishers and fic- tion, non-fiction, and children’s authors are welcome as well as young authors. While most participants will be from western Oregon, authors and publish- ers from farther away are welcome. Applications are available on the FFOB website at www.florencefesti- valofbooks.org.
