2 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, JULY 29, 2017 OBITUARIES DONAGHEY—Roy Etcher Donaghey Jr., passed away peacefully July 20, 2017, at age 69, surrounded by his family. He was married to Carolyn Anne (Golde) Donaghey, the love of his life whom he lovingly referred to as “The Boss” …his soul- mate, best friend and boss of 48 Roy Donaghey w o n d e r f u l years. Roy was born in Woodland, Calif., on May 24, 1948, named after his father, and spent his pre-teen years grow- ing up in the small Southern Pacific Railroad villages of Blue Canyon, Gold Run, Dutch Flat, and Alta, Calif., in the Sierra Mountains. Roy graduated from Roseville High School in California. Soon after graduating from high school, Roy enlisted in the U.S. Army. He had good mem- ories of his time in the Army, where he achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6), as well as sharpshooter. He earned an Expert Badge (rifle), a Good Conduct Medal and many more. After leaving the Army, Roy attended and graduated from Sierra College in Rocklin, Calif., where he studied art. For the next several years, Roy worked many different jobs; he was a welder, a mechanic, he did sanitation services, owned his own 4WD shop and was involved with the Lock In 4 WD Jeep Club in California. Roy really wanted the opportunity to homestead with his family in Oregon; he was able to do that working for the Southern Pacific Railroad. He left the railroad to avoid being bumped to another state because he liked Oregon so much; he went to work for Sause Brothers as a welder on the barges and carriers in Coos Bay and fell in love with the Oregon coast, where he lived until his death. As talented as Roy was at all things mechanical, he had a passion for art. Roy was always a natural at artwork, even from childhood. He was an excep- tional and proud artist …as any customer or friend would tell you, Roy had an eye and a gift. And, if you look very care- fully at Roy’s artwork, you will definitely see Roy’s heart there. His passion always drew him back to art, so in 1985, he and Carolyn launched his “dream job” and the ultimate career of his lifetime. Together, they cre- ated RED Artworks, Inc., and three years later Northwest T- Shirt Co. Finally, Roy was a business owner doing what he loved — art — developing and making silk screening, printing, etching signs and sandblasting. Roy loved what he did so much that even though he was born with no middle name, he legally gave himself one: “Etcher.” RED Artworks did business with local businesses in Florence, tourist retail stores along the Oregon Coast, Oregon State Park gift shops, restaurants, schools, churches, contractors, Boys and Girl Scouts, fire departments and many other Oregon motorcycle and antique car clubs and organizations. Roy and Carolyn also made many, many donations of his artwork to worthy charities over the years. Working was fun to Roy, but when he wasn’t working — he loved bow-hunting, fishing, GRADUATE NOTES riding the sand dunes and grav- el roads in the mountains, camping, and family and friend events. Roy also loved keeping up with Facebook; his friends all counted on Roy to post pictures of lunch or dinner with “the boss,” pictures of his current art projects, and to lovingly comment on friends and fami- lies’ posts. Roy is survived by his beloved wife, Carolyn; two daughters: Jayme (Donaghey) Card, Lyssa (Donaghey) Burton and husband Greg; and one son, Chad Donaghey and wife Amy; three granddaugh- ters and three grandsons, plus two cherished great-grandsons. He is also survived by his two sisters, Lois and Jois Donaghey, both of whom feel deeply that Roy’s presence on this Earth will be sorely missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Donaghey Sr. and Margie (Estes) Donaghey; a son-in-law, Larry England; and a mother-in-law, Mary Golde. In lieu of gifts and flowers, Roy’s family requests that you make a donation in his name. Donations will go to Siuslaw Middle and High schools bands and athletic departments and should be made through Burns Riverside Chapel. A celebration of Roy’s life is being planned for September 2017; details to be announced at a later date. All who attend are asked to come wearing shades of blue in honor of Roy’s favorite color.
