In the Roman Empire, no one is safe from the sting of betrayal: man, woman — or child. Young Nero’s royal heritage becomes a threat to his very life, first when the mad emperor Caligula tries to drown him, then when his great-aunt attempts to secure her own son’s inheritance. Faced with shocking acts of treachery, Nero is dealt a harsh les- son: it is better to be cruel than dead. While Nero idealizes the artistic and ath- letic principles of Greece, his very survival rests on his ability to navigate the sea of vipers that is Rome. The most lethal of all is Nero’s own mother, a cold-blooded woman whose singular goal is to control the empire. Through her cunning and poison, the obsta- cles fall one by one. But as Agrippina’s machinations earn her son a title he is both tempted and terrified to assume, Nero’s determination to escape her thrall will shape him into the man he is fated to become — a legendary emperor. With impeccable research and captivating prose, “The Confessions of Young Nero” is the story of a boy’s ruthless ascension to the throne. Detailing his journey from innocent youth to infamous ruler, “The Confessions of Young Nero” is an epic tale of the lengths to which man will go in the ultimate quest for power and survival. News about the Siuslaw Public Library 5 A C OVERED B RIDGES OF O REGON Jerry Russell from the Covered Bridge Society of Oregon will be at the library on Saturday, July 15, at 1 p.m., discussing the covered bridges of Oregon. Russell is a state expert in covered bridges, and Oregon features the largest collection of them in the West. The heyday of covered bridge building in Oregon occurred between 1905 and 1925 when there were an estimated 600 covered bridges in the state. By 1977, this number had dwindled to 56. The Society, of which Russell is the vice-pres- ident, works to ensure that Oregon's covered bridges will be preserved for future genera- tions. Members work with legislators, local governments, news organizations and histori- cal societies to provide funding, maintenance and protection to save the state's roofed bridges. To go along with this program, the library is pleased to present a photograph display, “The Covered Bridges of Lane County,” taken by the library’s own Mary Colgan-Bennetts.
