SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, JULY 12, 2017 3 B ASK A MASTER RECYCLER S USY L ACER , M ASTER R ECYCLER A MONTHLY COLUMN OF RECYCLING INFORMATION PROVIDED BY F LORENCE M ASTER R ECYCLERS For the Siuslaw News (A monthly column of recycling information provided by Florence Master Recyclers) Q. Where do I find the survey about styrofoam to-go boxes? A. This City of Florence survey is available here: goo.gl/forms/U6qw HBYr5VwPDrix1. The City of Florence’s Environmental Management Advisory Committee (EMAC) is ask- ing residents and businesses in Florence about their use and opinions of expanded polystyrene foam food and beverage containers. Survey responses will help EMAC assess the city’s policies related to foam containers. The survey includes just five questions. EMAC is considering the potential benefits, both locally and globally, of using biodegradable alternatives to foam take-out containers. Its primary motivation is to reduce foam litter in and around the Florence area, espe- cially in local lakes, creeks and on the ocean beaches. Other potential bene- fits include reducing harm to wildlife; improving human health; and reducing the costs to process recycling at recovery facilities due to foam contamination — expanded polystyrene foam is not recyclable. More than 100 cities across the United States have prohibited foam take-out food and beverage contain- ers in favor of biodegradable alterna- tives. The survey closes Aug. 15. Visit www.ci.florence.or.us/boards andcommissions/foam-food-and- beverage-container-survey for more information about expanded poly- styrene foam, including images of different types of containers. I love to garden, but don’t want to bother with a compost pile. What can I do with plant clippings? Is it okay to put them in the trash? A. Please don’t. Rather than send this easily recyclable material to the landfill, consider taking advantage of the City of Florence monthly yard debris disposal program, or take your debris to the Florence Transfer Station anytime. This will lessen the amount of waste going to our Short Mountain landfill, save you money and help reduce global warming. Plant debris that ends up in land- fills contributes to production of methane gas, a harmful “greenhouse” gas. Yard debris dropped at the city site is shredded and composted with Class A biosolids, to create the FloGro soil amendment — which you can then put back onto your gar- den! Plant debris, including leaves, weeds, grass and tree clippings, is accepted at the Kingwood Street entrance of the airport, at Kingwood and 27th streets, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the third Saturday of each month, May through October. Disposal costs start at $10 for a standard pickup truck load. Visit w w w. c i . f l o r e n c e . o r. u s / p u b l i c - works/2017-yard-debris-disposal- days for additional information. Upcoming 2017 dates for yard debris disposal are July 15 and Aug. 19. The Florence Transfer Station accepts grass clippings, tree limbs, brush and leaves. Disposal costs start at $8 for up to one cubic yard. Visit www.lanecounty.org/cms/one.aspx?p ortalId=3585881&pageId=4243964 for details. Modern landfills are highly spe- cialized facilities, and very expensive to construct. The Short Mountain landfill, near Eugene, went into serv- ice in 1976 and is currently expected to accept waste through at least 2088. It is a fascinating and educational place to tour; contact 541-682-4120 to request a tour. The more waste we can divert from entering the landfill, the longer it will be in service before we have to build a new landfill. For more information on the Short Mountain landfill, visit www.deq. state.or.us/lq/ECSI/ecsidetail.asp?seq nbr=848. Florence Master Recyclers (MR) are part of the Lane County Master Recycler Program, a service of the county’s Public Works Waste Management Division since 2002. The mission of the MR program is to bridge the gap between awareness and action by motivating people to reduce solid waste at home, work and play. This monthly column, written for the Siuslaw News, answers com- monly asked recycling questions. He has released nine albums to date and has record- ed the last couple at Imaginary Road with Will Ackerman (founder of Windham Hill Music). “There’s a certain muscu- larity to Louis Colaiannia’s piano playing,” said Ackerman. “While he’s quite capable of introspection, the Mo’s power and energy that Louis brings to the instrument is pal- pable.” Reservations are required and the address and directions to the concert in Florence (Sandpines West) will be fur- nished when reservations are made. There is a suggested dona- tion of $15 at the door. CDs will be available and may be autographed at the con- cert. All donations go to the artist.
