SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, JUNE 28, 2017 Upriver from 1A critical to that success. “Often during the training, you could hear the firefight- ers commenting about how good it was to train with oth- ers who’d they never worked with before,” Warren said. The students went through several scenarios, including full attacks on simulated burning structures, which required various ways to obtain water for their pumpers and water tenders. “They were able to work together through various challenges to receive opti- mum results,” Warren said. The temperature and con- ditions during the Upriver Academy were challenging, as it reached close to 90 degrees during the day. The three days of training were considered a success by Warren. “The purpose of the Upriver Academy was essen- tially to work together and the training is geared toward getting local volunteers to FF1 level. This type of train- ing is perfect since it builds esprit de corps and channels those who aren’t FF1s to strive towards it,” Warren said. He said the training was successful and the Swisshome and Deadwood volunteers learned a lot of essential information. “This went amazingly well,” Warren said. “You could tell from the excite- ment of each of the depart- ments, something special was happening. It was a great opportunity for mutual aid partners to gain insight on the methods each uses. It also solidified the willingness to work together.” Siuslaw Valley will be holding additional training throughout the year for FF1s, EMTS and more.
