‘Field Day’ emergency excersize held
MARK BRENNAN/SIUSLAW NEWS
Field Day 2017 was a rousing success for the Central Oregon Coast Amateur Radio Club. Every year the Club is
one of over 2700 groups throughout the US and Canada who set up emergency radio stations, complete with tents
and antennas, and keep their radios on the air for 24 straight hours. This year the Club set up 5 different types of
amateur radio stations in the wilds of Sutton Campground. All stations were powered by solar power, batteries
and emergency generators to simulate the power grid being down during a disaster.Experience around the world
has shown that in the event of an earthquake or tsunami, the first things to be wiped out are telephones, cell
phones and the internet. Field Day is practice for the Club members in setting up their radio stations from scratch
and using emergency power to be able to communicate on behalf of the cities of Florence, Dunes City and
Mapleton with the rest of Lane County – and with the rest of the world. The exercise lasted 24 hours, round the
clock, because if there is a disaster, normal communications will not be restored for days, weeks or even months.
