SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, JUNE 24, 2017 Deadwood Pioneer Cemetery seeks family members’ aid Deadwood Pioneer Cemetery has been awarded $5,860 from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department’s Historic Cemeteries Grant program. This money will be used to buy 35 headstones to place permanent markers on known graves that are unmarked or temporarily marked in the Deadwood Pioneer Cemetery, located just off Highway 36 on Deadwood Creek Road. The markers will be flat gray granite, custom- engraved stones, 16 inches by 8 inches by 3 inches. The list of names whose markers will be ordered include: Almasie, Bear, Beers, Burnett, Gallup, Leep, Light, May, Monroe, Rust, Scoggins and Wills. “We would like to be in contact with family members to confirm engraving before placing the order,” said Deadwood Pioneer Cemetery Secretary Megan Gerber. “People who are possibly related to these family names are asked to contact me direct- ly as soon as possible; we’d like to place the order by July 3.” Anyone who thinks they may be related to the listed family members, and anyone interested in volunteering, donating or researching are encouraged to email dead- woodcem@gmail.com, or call 541-964-3345. Concert to benefit PHPH Palliative Care program Palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the prob- lems associated with life- threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffer- ing by means of early identifi- cation and treatment of pain. It also addresses physical, psychosocial and spiritual aspects. It is the care that a patient receives when they don’t qualify for Home Health and are not ready for Hospice. On June 30, at 7 p.m., a spe- cial folk music concert spon- sored by Peace Harbor Medical Center and hosted at the Florence Events Center will raise funds for this unique pro- gram and its expansion of serv- ices beyond Florence and into Mapleton and the other up- river communities. To do this, philanthropy will be a major funding source due to the lack of reimbursements from most insurance providers as well as Medicare and Medicaid. The concert won’t be “sell- ing” tickets but will be request- ing a donation of at least $25 per person. Among those performing will be: Mike and Carleen McCornack: From Eugene, the duo has shared their musi- cal artistry with grateful audi- ences for more than four decades. From coffee houses to concert halls, the McCornacks’ beautifully crafted songwriting comes to life in their music with superb vocal harmony and sparkling guitar accompani- ment that touches the heart and never fails to tickle the funny bone.
