Over the weekend, a record 32 teams among Rookies, Minors and Majors All-Stars were on the fields at Miller
Park for the three day Rick and Corrine Gehlke Father’s Day Baseball Tournament hosted by the Siuslaw
Baseball/Softball Association. Teams from throughout the region began play at 5 p.m. on Friday, with opening cer-
emonies taking place Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. with a flag raising by Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue and the
playing of the National Anthem. Games continued from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. both Saturday and Father’s Day on
Sunday. “This was the first year Corrine wasn’t here for this,” said Rick Gehlke, whose wife passed away earlier
in the year. “This was very special to her.” Final results were unavailable at press time. (See more photos on 2B)

Steelhead, Chinook, trout
The Siletz River opened
for wild Chinook on April
1 (1 per day and 2 per sea-
son). Spring Chinook and
summer steelhead are
being caught. Drift boaters
are having success from
Moonshine Park to Siletz
and bank anglers are catch-
ing hatchery fish in the
Siletz gorge.
Casting spinners, drift-
ing bait or using a bobber
and jig can be effective.

Siuslaw boys basketball coach Dylan Perry
said he couldn’t have asked for a better out-
come for the first Oregon Dunes Basketball
Tournament, which took place over three days
this past weekend, June 16-18.
“As a coach and fan of basketball, it was
special to see so many great athletes from
around the state of Oregon competing at our
school,” Perry said of the tournament, which
included 22 teams from a total of 16 schools,
with 200 different players spending time on

the hardwood at Glenn Butler Court.
Games began Friday as Siuslaw opened
with a win against Adrian High School. The
Viking eventually went 5-2 in the tournament.
“Our guys worked hard and gave it their all
when they stepped onto the court in every
game this weekend,” Perry said. “It’s exciting
to watch our guys play the game and compete
against some of the best teams in the state.”
The format of two 15-minute halves played
with a running clock kept the tournament run-
ning swiftly as teams faced off every 45 min-
utes. Three officials were on the floor for each
game, and foul shots were limited to a single
attempt from the charity line. And if a player
was fouled but scored on the shot, no foul shot
was issued.
