2 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, JUNE 17, 2017 AUSTIN—Darlene Austin, 81, of Florence, passed away May 31, 2017. Darlene was a native Oregonian who worked as a real estate agent for 25 years. She was born in North Bend and attended Reedsport High School. After liv- ing and Darlene working in Austin San Diego, Calif., and Des Moines, Iowa, Darlene and her husband returned to Oregon and bought 7 acres off Canary Road. They loved their home there and Darlene especially enjoyed the wildlife that visited regular- ly, including deer, bear, elk, cougars and coyotes. After her husband passed away, Darlene decided that she didn’t want to spend her time on a riding lawn mower and keeping up 7 acres, so she sold the place and bought one in Greentrees Village. Darlene was a true outdoors- woman. She loved camping, hunting elk and deer, and fish- ing high country lakes for land- locked salmon. Danielle Steel was her favorite author and she especially liked to read when she was camping out. Her dream was to take a trip to Alaska. She often spoke of a favorite childhood memory, a hunting trip to Loon Lake with her grandfather when she was about nine years old. She bagged her first deer on that trip with a 30-30 Winchester. Darlene was the first female member of the Florence Elks Lodge. Burns’s Riverside Chapel is in charge of all arrangements. Memorial contributions may be left at Burns’s Riverside Chapel in her name. YOUNGBLOOD—Harley O. Youngblood passed away at the age of 89 on the afternoon of May 22, 2017, in the house he so loved in Florence, with his loving wife Harley Youngblood of 59 years by his side. Harley was active in many different organizations in the community such as the VFW, Cooties and many more. He was also a familiar voice on local KCST radio. He was loved by all who knew him. He was proceeded in death by his son Rick Youngblood. He is survived by his wife, Joanne Youngblood; four sons: Harley, Howard, Ron and John Youngblood; his daughter Joy Knipe; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 24, at 11 a.m., at the Presbyterian Church of the Siuslaw. BACHRODT —Jean Backrodt, 89, born in Evanston, Ill., to Fred and Mable Bachrodt on May 16, 1928, passed away May 23, 2017. Jean traveled with the Hormel Girls Sales and Entertainment Troop for six years before going to work for ABC Radio and Television. She retired from ABC after 30 years and moved to Florence in 1990. Jean will be missed by her many friends for her wonderful sense of humor and big heart.
