AT • JUNE 19 SHS FOOTBALL WEIGHT CAMP BEGINS Siuslaw News I t’s been five years since the hard- wood at Glenn Butler Court echoed with the dribble of basketballs and shriek of high-performance shoes this late in June. But come this weekend, the courts in the main and auxiliary gyms will be home to 24 varsity and JV teams competing from 17 schools during the first Oregon Dunes Basketball Tournament hosted by Siuslaw High School’s boys basketball and cheerleading teams. “The tournament came about because we wanted to get our kids as many opportunities to play basketball this summer as we could,” said boys coach Dylan Perry, whose team advanced to the opening round of state competition for the first time in nearly a decade last March. NED HICKSON/SIUSLAW NEWS A NNUAL YOUTH SURFING COMPETITION NEWPORT — The Surfrider Foundation’s Newport, Siuslaw and Portland Chapters will be hosting the ninth annual Otter Rock ’n’ Roll Youth Surf Competition and Beach Cleanup Challenge in celebration of International Surfing Day on June 17. Observed globally, International Surfing Day celebrates the sport of surfing and helps raise awareness about issues facing our ocean, waves and beaches. The Otter Rock n Roll will take place Saturday at Otter Rock/Devil’s Punchbowl State Park from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. An age-18-and-under youth surf contest, the event is open to surfers of all skill levels, is family-friendly and welcomes the general beachgoing pub- lic. Event pre-registration is $25 at www.otterrockandroll.com. Space is limited so sign up early to reserve a spot. SOLD S ATURDAY Beach registration is $35 and closes at 8 a.m. All participants will receive an event T-shirt and prizes from local sponsors. There will be beach games and activi- ties throughout the day including a spe- cial beach cleanup challenge, where youth can compete for different prizes through various stewardship activities. SALMON RIVER: Steelhead The Salmon River closed for wild and hatch- ery steelhead on March 31 to protect spawning wild steelhead.
