Hillsbery to offer free watercolor demonstration Once a year, nationally known watercolor artist Carole Hillsbery invites the commu- nity to her Florence Creekside Studio to learn about the mag- ical art of watercolor. For those who have won- dered what it would like to play with watercolor but don’t know the first thing about it or what materials to buy, this informative demonstration will help. The class will be held Monday, June 19, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Hillsbery has a passion for bright beautiful color and loves to splash, splatter, scrape, pour and move paint on her paper or canvas and those who choose to sit in front might even wear a splash or two of her paints by the end of the demo. Such jubilation is at the core of Hillsbery’s artistry and she loves nothing better than to infect and share this joy with her students. During this free demonstra- tion and class, Hillsbery will paint a fun loose watercolor showing the various tech- niques and bright colors she uses. She will also discuss the basics of getting started: what materials to purchase and where, what watercolor is all about, terminology, color washes, color mixing and more. This demo is not geared for more experiended artists. To sign up, visit www.car olehillsbery.com. Pre-regis- tration is required as there is limited space available. For more information, email Charlene Wilson at charwilson66@gmail.com or call 541-997-8676. Hillsbery is a national award winning artist and sig- nature member of the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, the Arizona Watercolor Society, and the Watercolor Society of Oregon. Her paintings hang in many private collections as well as at the Backstreet Gallery, in Florence; Artists Co-Op in Lincoln City, and Earthworks Gallery in Yachats. Buying or Selling? I can help. Oregon Coast Military Museum to celebrate the Jeep To celebrate the birth of the iconic jeep vehicle from World War II, Oregon Coast Military Museum (OCMM) is hosting a jeep-only show and shine Saturday, June 17, at Johnston Motor Co. on Highway 101 in Florence. The show will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is open to any military jeep, vintage CJ through current model of Wrangler. “Of all the transportation advancements coming out of WWII, the legendary Jeep has probably made more impact on society because it is still being produced 76 years later, and not just here in the United States but in other countries around the world,” said OCMM Executive Director Cal Applebee. “This show is intended to not just celebrate its creation, but also celebrate the icon that is today.” More than 20 Jeeps consist- ing of restored military jeeps, vintage CJs and new Wranglers are expected. “With this being the first year of this event, we don’t know exactly how many will show — probably more than the known two-dozen,” Applebee predicted. Jeep owners can register on site the morning of the event, and the first 25 registrants will receive a goodie bag. The show opens to the public at 10 a.m., but participants should plan to register starting at 9 a.m. The Florence-Siuslaw Lions Club will have its food cart on hand for the event. “One of the reasons we wanted to partner with Johnston Motor Company is that Ford Motor Company pro- duced nearly half of the mili- tary Jeeps during WWII, and we’ll have some outstanding restored examples of those on display throughout the week in their showroom and at the event,” said Applebee. “We invite everyone to bring Dad out for the show on Saturday as his treat for Father's Day.” The event is sponsored by Banner Bank and Johnston Motor Company. For more information, con- tact Applebee at 541-999-4175 or email cal97439@gmail .com. OCMM is located at 2145 Kingwood St. in Florence, and is open to the public Thursday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, visit w w w. o r e g o n c o a s t m i l i t a r y museum.com. FRAA holds 3-artist glass show, sale today in Old Town Four glass artists have joined together to put on an Art Show and Sale Saturday, June 10, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The venue is the Florence Regional Arts Alliance (FRAA) Art Center and Gallery, 120 Maple St. in Old Town, Florence. A reception for visitors will be held on Saturday, from 3 to 6 p.m. Just who are these four “glassy ladies” living here in Florence? They are Peggy Goodrow, who works with Stained Glass; Tina Shoys, who works with Mosaic Glass; Kristin Anderson, who works with Fused Glass; and Patti Williams, who does Lamp- work. Peggy Goodrow’s favorite thing to do with glass is to “use lots of color and different tex- tures of glass.” In addition to being a mem- ber of Florence Regional Arts Alliance (FRAA), she is on the Art Display Committee at the Siuslaw Library. Tina Shoys started to do mosaic work after retirement, and she sells her art on Etsy, at local arts and crafts events, and has sold work in several local shops. She is also a member of FRAA. Kristin Anderson says she- fell in love with the color and creativity that comes with cre- ating glass art. She has an Etsy store, and has sold work in galleries, including FRAA, where she is president of the board. She is also a member of Backstreet Gallery. Patti Williams, in addition to painting with watercolors and oils, creates jewelry which is “inspired by nature.” Her method of creating involves lampworking, which is a type of glasswork where a torch or lamp is primarily used to melt the glass. Once in a molten state, the glass is formed by blowing and shaping with tools and hand movements. Williams is a member and teacher at FRAA, and also serves on the Gallery Display Committee at the Florence Events Center.
