Ron Wyden recognized Florence resident Steve Olienyk with the Oregon Governor’s Outstanding Lifetime Volunteer Achievement Award. Wyden noted Olienyk’s military service in WWII, where he guarded the top war criminals in Japan including Hideki Tojo, Prime Minister of Japan during the Pearl Harbor attack. Wyden also recognized Olienyk’s many years of com- munity service. “Steve’s philanthropic work has earned him the highest honor from our state,” said Wyden. “He has had an extraordinary impact on those that have had a chance to work with him.” Some of Olienyk’s volun- teer projects include: Veteran’s Memorial Park Commission, American Legion Commander, Heceta Water District Board, Kiwanis Club, Flag Program, Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue Board, outreach to schools, Advisory Committee for Lane County Sherriff, ‘E XPLORE ’ COURTESY PHOTO Florence resident Steve Olienyk (left) is recognized for his many years of community service by U.S. Sen.
