4 B SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, JUNE 3 2017 A THLETES OF THE T C rent Reavis has been a busy jun- ior. As a three- sport standout, Reavis utilized his 6-foot-7 frame to its utmost as a tight end, line- backer and punter in football; center and forward in basket- ball; and in the throws in track, where he set new school records in both the discus and javelin. As the Vikings’ leading scorer on the basketball court, Reavis helped Siuslaw achieve its most successful season in more than a decade and reach the league playoffs. When asked about the impact that competition has had on him personally, Reavis said it gave him a way to express himself and get away from some of the problems he’s faced. But most impor- tantly, he said it gave him a chance to make his late father, Delbert Reavis, proud and represent the Reavis name. The Viking junior said this year has been a growing year for him, with the experience increasing his drive to succeed in athletics as well as in life. With his senior year still ahead, that drive will undoubtedly lead to more accomplishments that Reavis can rest assured will make his father proud. elie Mans is a young woman on the run. Literally. A two-time women’s 4A state cross country champion, Mans also went the distance in the both the 1,500-meter and 3,000-meter races in the Far West League last month, where she claimed the league title in both events and finished fourth in the 3,000 meters at state. Mans was also named a finalist for the Lane County Athlete of the Year and was invited to run in the Nike cross country regionals. But Mans’ pursuits don’t just pertain to what she can achieve after lac- ing up her running shoes. Academically, she is also a member of the National Honor Society, was a Future First Citizen nominee and carried a perfect 4.0 this year. With the next leg of life’s marathon carrying her to University of Idaho in pursuit of a med- ical career, it’s a sure bet that Mans will have no trouble going the distance.
