The tongue-in-cheek title of the upcoming exhibit at the Florence Events Center represents three local artists exhibit- ing oil paintings celebrat- ing Oregon’s “beauty,” and the amazing “beasts” that inhabit the state. Featured artists for the exhibit will be Ron Hildenbrand, John Leasure and Claudia Ignatieff and their art- work can be viewed at the FEC in Gallery One during the month of June. A graduate in art and graphic design, Hildenbrand worked in the field for many years, including having his own studio in Fairfield, Calif. He was also featured in a “California Backroads” TV episode. Upon retiring to Florence 12 years ago, he became an active vol- unteer in the art commu- nity, and he currently serves on the Florence Public Arts Committee. Leasure has lived in Florence for the past 36 years, owning West Coast Cabinets. He has taught oil painting class- es in Florence and Eugene for the past 25 years, and is the teacher for the popular “Wallflowers and Wine” painting classes at the FEC. Ignatieff, after a career in Early Childhood Education, retired to Florence with her hus- band Jim 12 years ago, and began taking art classes. She has been a featured artist at the Newport Visual Arts Center. Hildenbrand, Leasure, and Ignatieff are active in Florence Regional Arts Alliance (FRAA), serving on the Board of Directors and on the Display Committee. Additionally, Ignatieff and Leasure serve on the FEC Gallery Committee and are member artists of Backstreet Gallery. The artists have exhibited at many local venues, including the Siuslaw Library, PeaceHealth Medical Center and Oregon Pacific Bank. The public is invited to come to an appetizers and wine reception Sunday, June 4, from 3 to 5 p.m. Meet the artists and view their individual perceptions of “Beauty and the Beasts.” Volunteering Give some of your free time to the arts The Friends of the Florence Events Center has a long standing history of volunteerism. Without the thousands of hours given each year by a team of committed vol- unteers, the Florence Events Center would not function. A cur- rent call for new volunteers is going out for all aspects of altruism at the Events Center. Cindy Orsted began volunteer- ing in 2010. “After my husband passed, I was looking for something to fill my spare time and walked into the Florence Events Center,” said Orsted. When asked what she likes best about volunteering she answers, “I like everything! The people, the shows and learning new stuff. I don’t think there’s any- thing about this place I don’t like.” Opportunities for volunteers include: ushering, taking tickets, working backstage, helping with room set-up, art gallery set-up, office support and fundraising for the Friends of the FEC LRP’s “Master Class” 2 p.m. June 16 & 17 LRP’s “Master Class” 7 p.m. June 18 LRP’s “Master Class” 2 p.m. June 21 RAIN Demo Day 5 to 8:30 p.m. Bonneville Power Administration Open House 5 to 7 p.m. June 30 PeaceHealth Benefit Concert 7 p.m. Being a volunteer requires a minimal training orientation to find out what the interest of the volun- teer might be. The average num- ber of hours a volunteer may donate range from 2 to 20 per month.
