During the interview with Krause, he said he saw himself owning a brewery in 15 years. Waggoner, who represented the third generation of women in her family to be on the Rhododendron Court, sang a patriotic song about being “Proud to be an American” while she showed a slideshow of her interactions with veterans. When asked where she would like to travel, Waggoner said she would go to Austria, where her favorite movie was filmed and where “the hills are alive with the sound of music.” Princess Eyza Abbas was the first runner-up. She danced a fusion of flamenco and belly danc- ing. In her interview, she said she would travel back in time to the 1960s, since “I was born in the wrong era.” Princess Jewel Roby stepped out as the first Rhododendron princess to throw knives for her talent. In her dramatic perform- ance, she showed each knife to the audience before throwing each blade into a large straw target. She said a lot of people like her long, natural blonde hair, and said it was one thing that makes her unique. Princess Chehalis Stinger spoke about the loss of her mother at a young age, and all the things she wished she could experience with her. When asked what she would do with a million dollars, Stinger said she would buy a new Chevrolet truck and various out- door gear to take her friends and family on the dunes and out shoot- ing clay pigeons. Princess Abby Watkins spoke briefly about the bullying she has experienced before dancing an interpretive dance to a spoken word poem about how bullying prevents people from being “true to you.” During her interview, she said the celebrity she would most like to meet would be singer Carrie Underwood, whose journey Watkins admires. During the formal wear portion of the evening, mentors and parental figures escorted the Senior Court across the stage. The young men wore matching fitted suits with velvet jackets, each with a unique tie, while the young women wore long gowns and high heels in a variety of styles. The 2017 Rhododendron Festival theme is “Always Ready to Rhody” in honor of U.S. Coast Guard Station Siuslaw River. The Coast Guard presented the colors at the start of the evening, and Master Chief Tim Tregoning assisted 2016 Queen Rhododendra Hanna Anderson as they crowned Cahoon and Waggoner as the reigning rhody royalty. Along with their titles, which they will hold for the next year, Cahoon and Waggoner won the Rhody Court Scholarship. All 13 members of the 2017 Rhody Court will make appear- ances during Rhody Days. On Saturday, May 20, members will appear in Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue’s Junior Parade, and some might appear in the Rhody Run earlier in the day.
